Raymond Scott Tribute Concert at West Point
The United States Military
Academy Band opens its popular chamber music concert series with a
centennial tribute to the American composer Raymond Scott.
This performance will take place at 3:00
p.m. on the third floor of Egner Hall at
685 Hardee Place, West Point on Sunday, September 14th. At
this time, clarinetist Staff Sergeant Kristen Mather will lead a mixed
sextet of West Point musicians through an hour long program of concert
jazz by Raymond Scott. This concert is free and open to the
public.
Trained at the prestigious Juilliard
School of Music, Raymond Scott is perhaps best known for the output of
the Raymond Scott Quintette, a six-piece ensemble featuring Mr. Scott on
piano. In addition to writing and performing the big band inspired
sounds of the Raymond Scott Quintette, Mr. Scott worked on the forefront
of electronic music, inventing electronic instruments then composing and
recording with them. The rights to a number of Mr. Scott’s
compositions were purchased in 1943 by Warner Brothers Studios and were
subsequently used in numerous Looney Tunes cartoons. It is through
this association that Mr. Scott’s output is most well known.
Irwin Chusid, Director of the Raymond
Scott Archives will be present at Sunday’s performance to provide
insight into the life and career of one of America’s most influential
composers. Mr. Chusid will be lecturing on the music of Raymond
Scott as well as providing video footage relating to Mr. Scott’s life
and the motion pictures that have utilized his compositions. Be
sure to mark your calendar and join the members of the West Point Band
for this centennial tribute to one of America’s most significant
composers.
