CONTEMPORARY MOVIE DISCUSSION

PURPOSE

To analyze the leadership and ethical struggle between the main characters.

DESIRED OUTCOME

Cadets will realize that, as professional opinions differ, conflicts may arise. Competence and resolve must guide leaders through situations like the ones presented in the film. As future officers, the First Class must be prepared to assume the role of leader, and the responsibility that goes along with it.

• Examine personal beliefs based upon discussion of the moral-ethical dilemmas presented in the film.
• Learn various strategies that commanders and leaders can employ in dealing with ethical shortcomings and dysfunctional norms within the unit.
• Develop an appreciation for the dimension of moral courage required for any leader to confront issues such as those portrayed in the film and to "do the right thing."

CHETs are encouraged to use all members of the team in an effort to facilitate a series of small group discussions. To conclude, have each group present their ideas concerning the issues of the film to the entire class.

In the discussion groups, mediators should bring out the positive aspects of leadership displayed in the film. At the same time, allow the cadets to offer their own interpretation of what transpired as well as suggestions on how the situation could have been better handled.
