Honor Case Summary

ALLEGATION:

That a fourth class cadet did violate the Honor Code by failing to document help on a computer program with intent to gain an unfair advantage.

FACTS:

1. An instructor was grading computer programs and she noticed that there was a similarity between two programs. A comparison of the two programs revealed that they were substantially the same. Only one small procedure was documented as being from the other cadet's program.

2. When confronted, the cadet explained that:

a. He electronically copied another cadet's program onto his hard disk to help him get a better idea of how to solve the problem.
b. He "learned" how to complete the assignment from the other program, and did use most of the other program to complete his assignment.

3. This was the ninth program submitted during the course.

4. The cadet in question often waited until the last minute to complete assignments.

FINDING:

The cadet was found

TEACHING POINTS:

1. Cadets may not copy files or programs electronically that contain any work by another cadet.
2. Cadets must prepare all homework in their own hand. Cadets must do their own typing.
3. The input files to instructor provided computer programs such as spreadsheets must be manually produced by the cadets who include them in their homework.
4. Be clear and concise in the type of assistance you receive from others.
5. Prepare your documentation as you complete the program. Don't wait until you are finished in the event that you run out of time. Return to Top
