The 101 days of summer are winding down; the Class of 2005 has "marched-back" and new members have been accepted into our community. As my first academic year as superintendent commences, and we all get busy and focus on our missions, I want to remind you to include risk management in your plans for the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend.

I believe that our cadets, soldiers, civilian employees and community members are our most valuable resource. As we focus on combat capability, we will also stay committed to quality of service and ensure the continuance of USMA’s progressive safety culture.

In passing on his responsibilities as Director of Army Safety, Brig. Gen. Gene M. LaCoste stated that the new director must, "spearhead the Army’s continuing efforts to effect a cultural change where risk management is not just another safety requirement, but is fully integrated into all Army operations."

I echo his reasoning.

Accordingly, as community leaders, we must take the time necessary to ensure that this weekend’s activities are accident free. Stress the importance of avoiding complacency and managing the risks. Lead by example both at work and at home. A single word of caution could save a life or prevent serious injury. Commanders and leaders are encouraged to stress the use of the Army’s Risk Management worksheet to plan for both on and off-duty activities during this time frame.

Prior to the holiday celebration, please be mindful of these very important safety tips: swim only in authorized areas; be aware of the dangers of driving, boating or swimming after consumption of alcohol; be alert for warning signs of driver fatigue, which is one of the leading causes of holiday traffic fatalities.

Anne joins me in wishing all of you a safe and enjoyable Labor Day holiday.
