Gillis Field House
Also brand new is Army's indoor track surface inside venerable Gillis Field House.
The modern Mondo surface has added bounce and speed, and the colorful black and
gold lanes add to the spirit of Gillis. With a faster track the Cadets have been
able to attract the top competition from far and wide, as other schools know that
qualifying marks in the straight races, jumps and throws are more attainable at
West Point than in most other indoor facilities. The throw sector is composed
of crushed granite, allowing the use of outdoor implements, and a sliding net
at the mouth of the cage allows for the year-round practice of the outdoor
hammer, discus and javelin. The jump approaches are lightening fast, with the
last 50 feet of the long/triple jump runway consisting of the Mondo surface
covering an inlaid wooden floor (similar to a basketball floor), making that
area one of the best in the United States. Athletes from West Point, as well
as from schools across the country, have placed high acclaim on the new setup.
