Great River Sweep The Museum of the Hudson Highlands, the Black Rock Forest Consortium and the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson will sponsor the Great River Sweep at Donahue Memorial Park (Riverfront Park) Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers are encouraged to participate and can register by calling the museum at 534-5506. Wear work clothes including sturdy shoes and bring work gloves if you have them. Defensive-driving class The next N.Y.-state-certified defensive-driving class is Saturday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Register at ITR, building 695 or call 938-4455 for more information. Speaker at Cadet Chapel World renown preacher Dr. Luis Palau will speak at the Cadet Chapel Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. service. Palau has spoken to hundreds of millions of people in 104 nations through radio and TV broadcasts and in person. Palau believes basic answers to lifes struggles are found in the Bible. For more information, call 938-2003. USMA Tattoo scheduled The annual USMA Tattoo is Sunday, 1 to 6 p.m. at Trophy Point near the amphitheater. There will be performances by twenty pipe-and-drum bands from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. The USMA Band, the cadet pipes and drums, the cadet drill team and the cadet field music group will also perform. Corbin ceremony to be held The New York State Organization of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will honor the memory of Margaret Corbin, American Revolutionary War heroine, for the 75th year at the Old Cadet Chapel Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. with a memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony at her grave. Gulf War generals return to West Point Retired Gen. Fred Franks and the Simon Center for Professional Military Ethics will host a Senior Leaders Panel Wednesday for the senior class followed by a forum for the USMA staff and faculty. The panel list of participants includes Franks along with retired Gens. Barry R. McCaffrey and Binford Peay, retired Lt. Gen. Paul Funk, Don Holder, James Johnson, Tom Rhame and Terry Scott as well as several other invited officers from Desert Storm. The theme for the event is "The Professional Military Ethic and Combat Leadership in the Gulf War." The staff and faculty forum will be held in Thayer Hall 144 starting at 2:30 p.m. and is open to all. For more information, call Maj. Dane Rideout at 938-2494. Sacred Heart to hold fair The Sacred Heart Parish in Highland Falls will host a fair Thursday through May 6 on the parish grounds. Amusement rides, games, food and a casino are all part of the festivities. Fair times are as follows: Thursday: 6-11 p.m.; May 4: 6 p.m.-midnight; May 5: noon-midnight; May 6: 1-5 p.m. Pay one price for rides Thursday and May 6. For more information, call 446-4609. Olin speaker series The next Olin Seminar is Thursday and features retired Lt. Gen. James T. Scott speaking about the ground war in a lecture starting at 10:45 a.m. in Thayer Hall, Room 112. Scott is currently the director of the National Security Program at the John F. Kennedy School at Harvard. Maj. Gen. Bantz J. Craddock, commander of the 1st Infantry Division, will speak May 4 from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. in Robinson Auditorium. He will deliver a leadership lecture. Orange County College Night Approximately 200 colleges and universities as well as armed service representatives will attend the Orange County College Night Thursday, 7 to 9 p.m. in the main ballroom of Eisenhower Hall. The event is sponsored by the Orange County Counselors Association. Civil Service exam to be given The Civil Service clerical examination for permanent, entry-level clerical positions at USMA will be offered May 4 at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the training room, Civilian Personnel Advisory Center, bldg. 626. Farewell tea scheduled The ladies of West Point are holding a farewell high tea honoring Susan Christman May 14, 4-6 p.m. at Cullum Hall. Community members are invited to attend. Singing group to appear at Post Chapel "The Young Continentals," an evangelical group of young people feature high-energy singers, dancers and technicians, will be performing at the Post Chapel May 7 at 7 p.m. For more information, call Chaplain Tom Wild at 938-2003. Spouse Appreciation Day nearing The West Point community will observe Spouse Appreciation Day May 11, 9-11:15 a.m. at the volunteer center, bldg. 2104. A stamping class and a class in group dynamics will be offered. At the West Point Club, military spouses can enjoy lunch and dinner specials. Donations taken The Military Council of Catholic Women is accepting donations of baby items for the teen mom outreach program. Summer class schedule announced St. Thomas Aquinas College offers summer undergraduate classes at West Point. Free dancing lessons Free swing dance lessons are offered at the West Point Elementary School every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. followed by open dancing from 7 to 8 p.m. Classes are held in the multipurpose room. Michie Stadium area construction update Starting Tuesday, increased activity in the construction area around Michie Stadium will take place in an effort to create a new access road between Stony Lonesome and Mills roads. The following are the anticipated steps to this first construction phase: n Close Delafield Road east of Stony Lonesome Road; set up detour signs. n Install erosion and sediment controls and temporary work-zone signs. n Construct new storm drain on Mills Road between Michie Stadium and Lusk Reservoir. One-lane traffic will be controlled by flagmen. n Construct the bypass road between the existing Stony Lonesome and Mills roads but not including the intersections. n Reconstruct Delafield Road to allow emergency-vehicle access.Traffic on Stony Lonesome and Mills roads will be stopped by flagmen during blasting operations.
