Golf team finishes in fifth place

Army’s hopes of bettering its first-day showing at the Patriot League Golf Championships, hosted by Navy at the USNA Golf Course, fell short.

The Black Knights, carding a 446 composite to stand fifth following the first 27 holes, wound up in that same position after posting a four-man total of 485 over the final 27 holes for a 54-hole composite of 931.

Junior Ryan Hazelton finished with a four-over-par 75 to close with a 229 total (80-74-75) and finish eighth. Junior David Crawford tied with two others for 12th with a 231 (77-76-78) to top the Black Knights. Hazelton turned in Army’s best round at the tournament, carding a three-over-par 74.

Defending champion and host Navy overcame a five-stroke deficit to defeat first-day leader Colgate for the team title and automatic NCAA berth. Lehigh finished third (914) followed by Bucknell (917), Army (931), Holy Cross (947) and Lafayette (962).

Equestrians prepare for Nationals

The Zone Championships at Cazenovia College in Syracuse, N.Y., April 22 were the final stepping stone for all Intercollegiate Horse Show Association riders hoping to qualify for nationals in Atlanta May 4-6. Army had 10 team members competing and four will go on to Atlanta.

Junior Amanda Goldstein, already qualified as the Cacchione Cup Champion in the region, won the open fences for individual riders and won the championship ribbon and a Millers bridle.

Junior Matt Rains will represent West Point as the AQHA Champion. For the second consecutive year, Rains has reined his way to this championship. At nationals, he will compete in both Western Horsemanship and Open Reining.

Junior Erin Searfoss excelled in both of her Western and English classes. She qualified for nationals with her advanced ride in Western Horsemanship, placing second.

Sophomore John Collins qualified in the Western Beginner Horsemanship Division. Collins rode to a second-place finish in his class with a nearly flawless pattern and should do well in the Beginner Horsemanship Class at nationals.

USMA hosts extreme orienteering meet

The USMA Orienteering Club hosted its first extreme orienteering meet April 7 at Camp Natural Bridge. The race was a cross between a goat orienteering meet and an adventure race. In a mass start, all competitors began with a trail run of an unknown length to the start triangle. The orienteering course was an equivalent green/red (intermediate) and red/blue (expert) course.

Nearly 80 competitors participated in the challenging event that consisted of a memory course, a ruck run and an obstacle course. The final point led the competitors to the start of the ruck run that was followed by the obstacle course and run to the finish line. The novice course consisted of a trail run, a white/yellow orienteering course and a streamered-egg run to the finish line. Complete race results with photos can be found at http://www.dean.usma.edu/geo/clubs/o_team/Extremeo/extreme_o.htm.
