Return to the "POINTER VIEW"
April 27, 2001
Four buses to shuttle spectators to and between Sandhurst 2001 sites will operate from 6 a.m. until approximately 4:30 p.m. Saturday and, for the first time, a visitors center will teach spectators more about the competition.
Cadet 1st Class Tim Batig, the brigade Sandhurst officer, said spectators are welcome at all the sites along the course and said he hopes they will take the time to visit the visitors center, which will include displays on the history of the Sandhurst competition and a course map. The Directorate of Cadet Activities will set up a section to sell refreshments and Sandhurst 2001 T-shirts.
"This is the first year that spectators can buy the T-shirts," Batig said.
For spectators who need a little extra information, cadets will be on hand to answer questions.
Batig said the visitors center was designed with parents in mind.
"Were trying to give them as much opportunity as possible to find out what their sons and daughters have been doing every afternoon since January and how it culminates in this one-day competition," he said.
Batig said the cadet hosts at the visitors center will have practical information for spectators, as well.
"One of the most beneficial things is that theyll be able to tell them where to go to see their cadets and how to get there," he said.
To get them there, the Directorate of Logistics buses will be running throughout the competition.
The buses will leave from Thayer Statue, and with four buses running all day, Batig expects that a bus will leave about every 15 minutes.
Stop 1: Thayer Statue
Stop 2: Range 11, where Site 1(Inspection) and Site 2 (NBC) are located
Stop 3: Long Pond, where Site 3 (Boat Movement) and the Sandhurst Visitors Center are located
Stop 4: Site 4/Gettysburg Range, the site of the marksmanship competition
Stop 5: Site 5, where the weapons disassembly and reassembly take place
Stop 6: The river-crossing site
Stop 7: Rappel site (Site 8)
From the rappel site, the buses will return to Thayer Statue.
At Stop 6 (one-rope bridge/river crossing), passengers will be discharged at the pulloff near the golf cart bridge and will have to hike approximately 100 meters to the river-crossing site. From the river-crossing site, spectators can either catch the bus where it dropped them off and ride to the rappel site or they can walk approximately a mile to the wall obstacle, then continue on to the rappel site on foot before catching a bus back to Thayer Statue.
