Volunteers Alys Crisman (left) and Betty Rasmussen present USMA Superintendent Lt. Gen. Daniel W. Christman with an over-sized symbolic check for $2,532,687.70 representing the dollar value of hours donated by USMA volunteers in 2000.

An estimated 400 West Point volunteers attended the United States Military Academy’s annual volunteer recognition ceremony in the West Point Club’s Grand Ballroom April 17.

Installation volunteer coordinator Sharon Kane thanked the volunteers in attendance, who she said "gave from the heart throughout the year."

Lt. Gen. Daniel W. Christman, USMA superintendent, spoke about the value of self-less service and the priceless contribution that volunteers make to the community.

"You have given beyond self," Christman said. "That’s what volunteerism is all about."

Kane did put a price on their efforts. She figured out what it would have cost the government if each volunteer was paid $10.72 per hour.

The volunteers then presented Christman with a symbolic check for $2,532,687.70 representing the cost of 236,038 man-hours that 1,600 volunteers logged last year.

"West Point will stay a national treasure with your efforts," Christman said.
