Army freshman David Yu gets ready to pass the ball in action against Fordham Sept. 23. Yu nearly tied the game at one against Cornell Tuesday night.

The Cornell Big Red received goals from Evan Weiner and Scott Benowicz in defeating the Army Black Knights, 2-0, in a regional match Tuesday night at Clinton Field. The loss for the Army men’s soccer team extends its winless streak to nine matches.

Army had one of its best offensive matches in more than a week, ripping off seven shots towards Cornell goalkeeper Doug Allan, who finished the game with three saves. The biggest save for Cornell came midway through the first period when midfielder Matt Eldridge slid down the goalline to deflect a shot taken by forward Mike Linnington.

The Black Knights also had several chances to score off corner kicks, but the Big Red defense was able to clear out all their attempts. Cornell took six corner kicks, but the Army defense also did a solid job of defusing all of the Big Red’s chances.

Cornell, limited to five shots, cracked the scoreboard first in the 38th minute when Weiner headed in a shot from 10-yards out. The ball, which came off Weiner’s head with no clear direction, fooled Army junior goalkeeper Kevin Larrabee as it sailed over his head and into the upper left corner of the net. Cornell midfielder Ian Pilarski was credited with the assist.

With the Big Red clinging to a 1-0 lead late in the second period, the Army offense began to generate some momentum as it received a pair of strong shots from senior Mark Hillen and freshman David Yu, who came within inches of tying the match on a free kick.

The momentum, however, wasn’t quite strong enough as Cornell was able to get the ball back with a few minutes to go. Closing in on Larrabee, forward Ted Papadopoulos was able to feed the ball to Scott Benowicz, who promptly knocked it in from 6-yards out at the 82nd minute mark. Larrabee finished the match with one save.

"I’ve been satisfied with the consistency of our game," said head coach Joe Chiavaro. "We’ve put together a good effort against some good teams over the past two games, but we just can’t seem to get the goals."

Army resumes Patriot League action when it visits Colgate Saturday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
