| Army junior Tara Mahoney (#504) leads the pack against Navy here Oct. 12. Black Knight freshman Stephanie Richardson (#517) trails. |
Army received a tremendous effort from a multitude of runners as it clinched second place at the Patriot League Cross Country Championships hosted by Colgate University Saturday. Freshman Angela Petersen led the Black Knights with a strong fifth-place finish.
Sophomore Alexis Seefeldt, who had a career-breakthrough race in Army’s dual victory over Navy, came through with another solid effort, finishing ninth overall. Petersen and Seefeldt were both named to the All-Patriot League team after the race.
Though the Black Knights were unchallenged in their bid to secure second place, Bucknell showed why they were picked as the preseason favorites by easily coasting to its second consecutive Patriot League Championship. The Bison swept the top three spots, with All-American Becki Marshall breaking the tape in 22 minutes and 40.8 seconds. Chris Crowe finished second overall (22:50.4), while Theresa Dennis duplicated her third place performance from a year ago by crossing the line in 22:52.8.
Bucknell scored 28 points to outdistance themselves from Army, who finished with 77 points. The battle for the third spot was extremely close as Lehigh (106), Holy Cross (106), American (113) and Colgate (118) kept the element of the team race exciting.
Petersen ran 23:01.6 in recording the fastest 6000-meter time of the year for Army, while Seefeldt finished just over twenty seconds off Petersen’s pace with a 23:25.9. Rounding out Army’s top-five scorers were freshman Stephanie Richardson (19th, 24:04.0), sophomore Analise Kolsch (21st, 24:10.6) and junior Tara Mahoney (23rd, 24:16.7).
