Rifle team shatters own record

Freshman Jared Lostetter’s career-high 394 sparked Army’s record-setting 1551 performance in air rifle as the Black Knights’ rifle team bettered their previous high, set Saturday, by 13 points to top the field in that discipline while finishing runner-up overall at the Buckeye Invitational Sunday.

The Black Knights shattered the school air rifle mark in back-to-back meets over the weekend. After breaking the school mark (set in 1990) by a point in firing a 1538 at the Walsh Invitational, Army smashed it with a 1551 in topping the 12-team field at the Buckeye Invitational.

Army added a 4609 in smallbore in posting a composite score of 6160, which tied the school record first set in November 1986, while besting archrival Navy’s 6146 by 14 points for second place. It was the first time since Army returned to varsity competition in 1997 that the Black Knights have finished ahead of the Mids. West Virginia, which finished third at last year’s NCAAs, wrestled the team title from the defending champion Black Knights in compiling a 6178.

Lostetter, who broke his air rifle mark in both meets over the weekend, shattered it by six points at the Buckeye Invitational in scoring a 394. That mark, which is just four points shy of the school mark, earned him a share of second place. Rounding out the rest of Army’s record-setting squad were junior Jesus Tavares (388), freshman Paul Charbonneau (386) and junior Kim Pienkowski (383)

Pienkowski edged Lostetter by a point for team individual honors in smallbore with her 1161. Making up the rest of that foursome were junior Paul Kavanaugh with a career best 1153 and Charbonneau’s 1135.

"It was an outstanding weekend," commented second-year coach Ron Wigger. " Jared (Lostetter) has been extremely consistent in every match, and he was outstanding both days. If he continues at this pace, he has excellent chance of qualifying for the NCAAs along with garnering All-America honors."

The Black Knights are now idle until January.
