Macfarlane named to All-Tourney Team at Army Invitational

Hofstra used 22 points from Jen Brickey to defeat Army 68-51 in the consolation round of the Army Tip-Off Women’s Basketball Tournament here Saturday.

Swapping baskets for most of the first half, Hofstra took the initial lead. Army tied the game (11-11) for the first time at 11:49 before pulling ahead 13-11 at 11:18 on a basket from senior Halaevalu Helu.

Over the next 6:54, the two teams exchanged leads and tied the game four times before Hofsta (1-1) took the lead for good with 4:37 remaining until the half. The Pride used a 14-6 spurt to head into the locker room with a 38-27 advantage.

In the opening 8:27 of the second half, Hofstra outscored Army 21-6 to take a 16-point lead (49-33). Down by as much as 24, the Black Knights came as close as 15 points.

Junior Christine Gassman led all Black Knights with 12 points. Also in double figures, sophomore Katie Macfarlane and Helu scored 10 each. Macfarlane grabbed a team-high five boards. With 22 rebounds this weekend, Macfarlane set an Army tournament record.

Brickley led all Hofstra players with 22 points. Rume Pela chipped in 17 points and Kimberly Coke added 10 for Hofstra. Coke also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

With the win, Hofstra improves their winning streak over the Black Knights to two. The Pride’s last win against Army (0-2) came in the consolation game of the West Point Tournament Nov. 29, 1998.

Macfarlane was the lone Black Knight chosen to the all tournament team. Joining her was Coke from Hofstra, Julie Epton from Pennsylvania, Janna Magette from Davidson and Jewel Clark from Pennsylvania. Clark was also selected as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
