Cadets recognized by engineering, computer science honor societies

By Maj. Timothy Presby, Asst. Professor
Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

West Point’s Student Chapters of Eta Kappa Nu (EKN) and Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) recognized 19 cadets as "Best-in-Course" award winners Tuesday during a ceremony in Thayer Hall.

HKN is the national electrical engineering honor society and UPE is the national computer science honor society.

To receive this award, a cadet has to earn the highest grade in one of 24 different electrical engineering or computer science courses taught during the 2001 Fall semester.

Three cadets succeeded in being the top student in more than one course:

- Cadet 1st Class Zachariah Miller earned top honors in three different computer science courses.

- Cadet 1st Class Matthew Adams, earned top honors in three different electrical engineering courses.

- Cadet 2nd Class Joel Blanchard earned top honors in two different courses in both disciplines.

Col. Andre H. Sayles, the U.S. Military Academy’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department head and program directors Cols. Clark K, Ray Jr. and Glen P. Dudevoir presided over the ceremony.

Each cadet received a framed best-in-course certificate and a $25 gift certificate for each best in course they achieved. The gift certificates are redeemable at the post exchange and were made possible by contributions from the Association of Graduates.
