| Sophomore Rafael Albornoz serves. His win at the No. 3 singles spot proved to be the winning set for Army. |
Junior Arnie Albornoz, sophomore John Sabia, senior Sonny Avichal and sophomore Jarrett Skrobarcek each had a hand in a pair of wins in leading Army to a 6-1 decision over Binghamton in the nightcap of a men’s tennis doubleheader Saturday at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. Army defeated St. Bonaventure by that identical score earlier in the day.
The Black Knights were hardly taxed in doubles, dropping just five games in sweeping all three, in jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. Arnie Albornoz and Sabia at No. 1 and frehman Steven Srivastava and senior Jeff Lau at No. 3 paired for identical 8- 2 scores, while Avichal and Skrobarcek cruised to an 8-1 win in second doubles. It was the second sweep of the day by all three teams.
Sabia, Rafael Albornoz, Avichal and Skrobarcek clinched one-sided decisions at No. 2 thru 5 singles. Sabia had the toughest match, winning 6-3, 6-3 over Dmitri Litvak. Arnie Albornoz was the only player extended after splitting his first two matches with Akshay Rao (6-2, 3-6) at the tough No. 1 spot. Albornoz, pulling out his second three-set decision of the day, then rode to an easy 6-1 victory in the deciding match.
Arnie Albornoz, Sabia, Avichal and Skrobarcek were 4-0 on the day after posting a pair of wins in both singles and doubles in the doubleheader sweep as the Black Knights stand 2-0 in the winter/spring and 4-1 in the combined seasons.
Army is home hosting Boston College and Vermont Saturday with the first match slated for 9 a.m. and the second scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
