Boxers battle it out for Brigade Open titles

Melson becomes three-time title winner 165-pound victory

West Point pugilists mixed it up at Christl Arena Feb. 1 to decide the new crop of Brigade Open Boxing champions.

The 46th Brigade Boxing Open crowned 11 champions before hundreds of fans in the yearly event.

Six first-time champions won titles on the evening. Two more earned their second crown, with three claiming third-time honors.

The evening opened with the 119-pound bout where D1 Ducks freshman Ray Ramos won his first Open title with a unanimous decision over sophomore company mate Frank Aburto.

E1 Vikings senior Erin Searfoss defended her 125-pound title successfully in only the second women’s bout in Open history with a unanimous decision over B4 Buffaloes junior Kira Baughman.

National Collegiate Boxing Association All-American 132-pounder Fred Kim, a F4 Frogs sophomore, won a unanimous decision over D4 Dukes classmate Vernon James. Kim earned his second consecutive 132-pound Open title with the win.

E1 Vikings sophomore Henry Chavez won his first Open title with a unanimous decision in the 139-pound bout over F3 F-Troop sophomore Gill Taylortyree.

B2 Bulldogs junior Cody Brown won his first Open title at 156 pounds with a split decision over H3 Hurricanes senior John Morris.

C1 Crusaders junior Boyd Melson won his third Open title with a unanimous decision at 165 pounds over A3 Anacondas sophomore James Paine.

Melson now holds the 165-pound title for the last two years and won the 156-pound title as a freshman. He is also the reigning NCBA National Champion at 165 pounds.

D3 Devils senior Tom Kilbride earned his first Open title with a unanimous decision over C1 Crusaders freshman James Watson.

F3 F-Troop senior Tom Summers won a battle of two two-time Open champions when he earned a unanimous decision over H1 Root Hawgs classmate Sam Jackson.

Summers now holds two 185-pound Open titles and one at 175 pounds.

Rob Greer, a G3 Gophers sophomore, won his first Open title at 195 pounds with a split decision over B3 Bandits classmate Duane Mantle.

The night’s events concluded with E4 Elvis junior Rob Horton posting his first Open title in the heavyweight class with a win over D3 Devils sophomore Eric Stanbra. Horton knocked Stanbra down in each of the first two rounds on his way to a unanimous decision.
