Mandatory pre-separation counseling If you are a soldier transitioning from the military, it is mandatory to attend pre-separation counseling with the transition assistance program here -- a localized version of ACAP. The rule of thumb is to schedule your counseling 180 days in advance of your separation/retirement date. Pre-separation counseling is scheduled for the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. in bldg. 622. Call 938-5658 to schedule a date of your choice. Valentine Sunday brunch The West Point Club will hold a special brunch Sunday in honor of Valentine’s Day. Ladies will get a free rose and brunch for half price. Seating will be at 10 a.m. and noon and the club now offers valet parking. Call 938-5120 for reservations. CWOC program announced The Christian Women of the Chapel is planning a special program "Tea, Talent and Testimonies," Wednesday from 8:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Post Chapel. All community ladies are invited to attend and share the abilities and stories of the participants. For more information, call 446-3578. Student leadership groups Keystone Club meetings are held alternating Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. Torch Club (middle school leadership group) meetings are Fridays at 4:30 p.m. All meetings take place in bldg. 500. Call 938-8379 for more information. LaLeche League meeting announced The Highland Falls LaLeche League will meet Thursday at 6:45 p.m. at the Post Chapel offices in bldg. 692. The topic of discussion will be "There’s a New Baby in Your Life." All women interested in breast-feeding are invited to attend. Babies and toddlers always welcome. Coloring contest underway In celebration of African-American History Month, the West Point main exchange is sponsoring a coloring contest for kids ages 4- to 12-years old. Select one of 12 pictures featuring extraordinary African-Americans in history and turn in the completed picture no later than Feb. 15. Photos are available at the PX. Judging will take place Feb.16 at 2 p.m. All entrants receive coupons for kids merchandise sold in the main exchange. The top three winners in each category will receive AAFES gift certificates and a coupon for a free kid’s meal at Burger King. Story hour starting The West Point Post Library spring session of story hour runs from Feb. 15 through April 30, every Tuesday at 10 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. It is open to all West Point community children ages 3 to 5. Pre-registration is required; stop by the library for more information or call 938-2974. Youth of the Year competition The annual Youth of the Year competition runs from Feb. 15 through March 15. Interested teens should call Jim Bennett at 938-8379. Creative scrapbooking classes offered Learn how to safely preserve your memories and family history in a meaningful and beautiful way during creative scrapbooking classes at the multi-crafts shop, bldg. 626. You’ll learn many techniques for organizing, cropping, laying out, mounting, journalizing and much more. Bring six to eight photos to the first class you attend. Instructor Tanya Waller will provide all other necessary materials to complete your first page. Classes are scheduled at 7 p.m. on the following days: Feb. 16 and 20, March 6 and 20 and April 3 and 17. You can start at anytime. Call 938-4812 for more information or to pre-register. Chamber Music Series continues The USMA Band’s Chamber Music Series will feature Sgt. 1st Class Gary McCourry on baritone saxophone performing the music of Charlie Parker and Pepper Adams in a concert Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Jewish Chapel here.The event is free and open to the public. Due to the 100 percent vehicle and photo I.D. card inspection at Stony Lonesome and Thayer gates, those planning to attend should allow extra time. Quilting classes offered Learn to make a quilt at classes held at the Arts and Crafts center. The Americana-style wall hanging features a West Point cadet, a flag and a star block. Classes start Feb. 20 for four consecutive Wednesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. For more information, call 938-4812. WPWC to hold fashion show The West Point Womens’ Club will host a fashion show scheduled at the Hotel Thayer Feb. 26. This is a dinner/show package and reservations are required by noon Feb. 21. Models will display examples of day wear, prom wear, evening formal wear and bridal selections. New program coming to YS March Madness -- Teen Summer Job Prep Program will be held Mondays in March at 4 p.m. at Youth Services . There is no cost to participate but pre-registration is required. DUSA event rescheduled The Daughters of the United States Army "Sweets and Savories" event scheduled for Tuesday has been rescheduled to March 5. WPWC scholarships applications available The West Point Women’s Club awards scholarships to club members, high school seniors and returning college students who are or will be pursuing a college degree. Scholarship applications are available now. They must be completed and received by March 15. To be eligible, applicants must be a WPWC member or dependent of a WPWC member. Grants can be used for tuition, books and fees. Applications will be judged on scholarship, community service, letters of recommendation and an essay. Plan ahead and make reservations for your dog or cat to be cared for at Morgan Farm kennels while you are away. Call 938-3926. Single-parent support group starting Being a single parent is a challenge you should not have to face alone. A support group, open to moms, dads, grandparents, guardians -- anyone who shares the challenging and rewarding job of raising children alone is in the formulation stages here. Military (officers and enlisted) and civilians are welcome. The group is also open to "temporary" single parents placed in this situation by deployment or other circumstances that have made you a geographic single parent. If you are interested in participating or need more information, call Capt. Christina Guthrie at 446-1376 after 5:30 p.m. Quarters inspections for those departing summer ‘02 All officers and key and essential civilians (visiting professors, etc.) departing the installation between May 1 and Aug. 31 are required to have their quarters pre-termination inspections scheduled and completed by March 29. You are not required to have orders to schedule your pre-termination inspection. All final termination inspection appointments must be schedule prior to April 30 for the date you expect to depart the installation.
