The Army freshmen tandem of Maelynn Bernosky and Marissa Limsiaco cruised to their third doubles title of the year after knocking off the top-seeded Columbia University team of Leena Krishnaswamy and Melissa Nguyen 8-1 Sunday afternoon at the Cornell Winter Classic.
The Army pair is now 3-1 in championship matches. During the fall season, Bernosky and Limsiaco won titles at the Patriot League Individual Tournament and at the Quinnipiac Invitational.
Earlier in the day, the Black Knight duo put down the Lions’ team of Kristin Martinez and Malwina Lys-Dobradin 8-3 to reach the finals.
Limsiaco also enjoyed success in the singles brackets. After losing to Cornell’s Kate Sternberg in Saturday’s semifinals of the ‘C’ singles flight, Limsiaco was placed in a special bronze medal matchup against Columbia’s Sarita Konka and won 7-5, 6-3. In three days of competition, Limsiaco finished with a 4-0 record against the Columbia Lions.
Also making it into the bronze medal round were senior Ali Rohr at ‘A’ singles and sophmore Melanie Bundoc at ‘B’ singles. However, Rohr fell to Syracuse’s Masha Kabanova 6-4, 6-4 and Bundoc was tripped up by Columbia’s Miriam Rahall, 6-2, 6-4.
In the ‘D’ flight consolation bracket, junior Lauren Leftin and freshman Pam Chavez reached the finals but elected not to face each other. To reach the finals, Leftin defeated Columbia’s Lys-Dobradin 6-2, 6-2 and Chavez defeated freshman teammate Lyndsey Nott 5-7, 6-2 (10-4).
Army’s next contest is in Colorado Springs today and Saturday for matches against Air Force, Denver University and the University of Wyoming.
