Cardio kickboxing offered

Get fit with cardio kickboxing Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. at the MWR Fitness Center (old PX). Come and try the latest fitness rage -- your first class is free. Beginners to advanced exercisers are welcome. Call instructor Dawn Therrell at 446-0435 for specific class information.

Basketball tournament planned

The staff of the Community Recreation Division sports office will conduct the 2002 Unit-Intramural Basketball Tournament for the Superintendent’s Trophy points on the following Sundays: Feb. 24, March 3 and 10 from noon to 6 p.m.

The following units will be participating for points: HHC, MEDDAC, MPs and the Band. The following teams will be invited to enhance the program: Marines, USCC, WP Civilians and the Military Reserve units working here.

The tournament will be open to any other team wanting to participate as long as they are authorized I.D. card holders. All teams must supply a point of contact to Jim McGuinness as soon as possible.

Tappan Zee sports run

The annual Tappan Zee Sports Run is slated for March 10 starting at 9 a.m. This is a 10K and 2-mile race.

Special awards will be given in the law enforcement, firefighter, lawyer, doctor, veteran, military, allied health, educator, Tappan Zee alumni (male and female) and clydesdale division (male only). Regular awards will be given in 5-year age group increments.

Morgan wins ski event

David Morgan participated in the 2nd Southern Vermont Junior Council JV Giant Slalom race sponsored by the Mount Snow Alpine Ski Training Center Jan. 27.

Morgan, who competed against 54 other junior male races, took 1st place having the fastest overall combined time. He beat the combined field (95 male and female competitors) by almost five seconds.

As a result of past performances, the Alpine coaches selected him to compete Jan. 28 with the older, J4 racers in a Super G race at Stratton Mountain, Vt., where he placed 12th. He was the only junior J5 in the top 30 male finishers.

City bowling tournament nears

The Newburgh Women’s Bowling Association will hold their annual city tournament March 9 and 10, and 16 and 17 at Southern Dutchess Bowl in Beacon, N.Y.

Women’s fencing dominates

Army women’s fencing posted five victories against five opposing teams at Sacred Heart University’s Invitational meet Sunday. The team started with a 24-3 win against Yeshiva University and continued on to down Smith College (22-5), Sacred Heart University (20-7), Hunter College (22-5) and Marist College (22-5)

The sabre squad led the way with an overall bout score of 40-5. Indivudal highlights included sophomore Zandra Cioffi’s 14-1 record in saber, junior Gennelle Lee’s 12-3 record in foil and sophomore Stephani Whittle’s 13-1 record in epee.

Freshman Janice Tapay had the best record for the new fencers going 3-1 in the Sacred Heart match.

Both men’s and women’s fencing will travel to Drew Univeristy this weekend.
