Army swims to success over Dartmouth

Freshman Steve Miller contributed to the Army men's 200- medley victory that opened the meet against Dartmouth Saturday.

Army senior co-captain Lucas Meyers has been winning races all year long, but saved one of his best performances for Saturday to help give the Black Knights a 159-139 victory over the Dartmouth Big Green. Meyers, who collected wins in the 50-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle events now has 15 victories this season.

Meyers wasn’t the only Army racer to collect multiple wins for his team. Classmate Mychajlo Eliaszewskyj took first-place in the 100- and 200- yard breaststroke, freshman Sebastian Rodriguez captured wins in the 100- and 200- butterfly, and diver Matt Lofton swept both the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions. Lofton has captured both springboard events nine times this season.

The win for Eliaszewskyj in the 200- breast was his eighth of the year in just ten races. His time of 2:07.31 set a new meet record breaking the 12-year-old mark that was set Dartmouth’s Rick Smyers (2:08.66).

Eliaszewskyj, Rodriguez and freshman Steve Miller also teamed up with sophomore backstroker Charlie Lewis to win the opening 200-yard medley relay race with a time of 1:36.64.

The meet was a seesaw battle through the first few events as Army and Dartmouth swimmers exchanged victories, but the Black Knights were able to seal things off near the halfway mark of the meet. With the Big Green trailing close behind, Army responded with consecutive victories in the 200-fly, 50- and 100-freestyle. Army’s performance in the 50-free essentially clinched the meet, after Meyers, Miller and freshman Richard Babbitt swept the top three spots, giving them 16 of 19 possible points.

Army’s final regular season meet is tonight against the Bears of Brown University. The competition gets underway at 7 p.m. in Providence, R.I.

Three women swimmers earn multiple wins

Army had one of its best meets of the season as it beat the Dartmouth Big Green 153-147 Saturday afternoon at Crandall Pool. By capturing 11 of the meet’s first 12 races, the Black Knights were able to cruise for the remainder of the competition and put an end to their four-meet losing streak.

Sophomore Kristen Vahle competes in the 200-breast stroke against Holy Cross earlier in the season. Vahle led the sweep of the 100-breast Saturday.

The Black Knights began their day with a one-two finish in the 200-yard medley relay, then followed with six consecutive Army wins, which included a pair of victories from sophomore Garrett Shannon in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-butterfly and a Black Knight sweep of the top-three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke led by sophomore Kristen Vahle.

Also picking up wins in that stretch were freshman Shannon Kelley in the 1000-free, junior Monique Robertson in the 100-back and sophomore Ashley Dellavalle in the 50-free.

After Robertson (200-back), Vahle (200-breast) and Shannon (500-free) earned a couple of more victories for Army midway through the meet, the Black Knights had compiled enough points to take the contest away from the Big Green. Army has now beaten Dartmouth three-straight times.

Army has two weeks to prepare for the Patriot League Championships, a three-day competition that gets underway Feb. 15.
