Freshman Sebastian Salas returns a volley in action Saturday.

Senior Sonny Avichal was the lone player extended to three sets in singles competition as Army cruised to its first blanking of the spring campaign with a 7-0 victory over Vermont in completing a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Black Knights rallied to turn back Boston College 4-2 earlier in the day to improve to 4-0.

Avichal and sophomore Jarrett Skrobarcek moved up two spots in teaming to record an 8-4 win at first doubles. Sophomore Rafael Albornoz and freshman Sebastian Salas won 8-4 at second doubles with senior Jeff Lau and freshman Josh Jones completing the sweep and notching the point after teaming for an 8-3 decision at third doubles.

Army captured five of the six singles matches in straight sets, yielding just 14 games in four of those victories. Avichal, the only Army player forced to a third set, gave up just three games in the final two sets in disposing of Matt Spring , 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.

The only Black Knight pushed in straight sets was Arnie Albornoz, who defeated Zeljko Knezevic at No. 1 singles after taking the first set 7-6 (8-7) in the tie-breaker. He quickly dispatched him in the second with a 6-2 verdict. Albornoz clinched the crucial fourth point in pulling out a three-set decision to provide Army the margin of victory in its win over Boston College in the first match of the day.

Rolling to one-sided victories were sophomore John Sabia (6-3, 6-1), Rafael Albornoz (6-2, 6-2), Skrobarcek (6-2, 6-2) and Lau (6-1, 6-1) at second, third, fifth and sixth singles respectively.

"I am very pleased with our start, especially the wins over St. Bonaventure (last week) and Boston College," said head coach Steve Strome. "We played tough when we were down in the Boston College match, and that is important from a coaching viewpoint.

"The players just kept fighting and I am very happy with their competitive toughness," added the 10th-year mentor who led the Black Knights to the Patriot League title and automatic NCAA bid the past two years.

Army will host Connecticut (9 a.m.) and Patriot League member Lehigh (3 p.m.) in its third straight doubleheader Saturday at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
