Bicentennial Stamp/Coin Unveiling The USMA Bicentennial Stamp Subcommittee has been active for 10 years. These volunteers have focused their efforts on applying to the Postmaster General for a West Point Stamp commemorating the 200th anniversary of USMA. The stamp will be issued March 16 as part of the Founders Day activities. The USMA Bicentennial Coin Subcommittee had similar duties in mind when they sought approval for the issuance of a silver commemorative coin to be issued at West Point on the occasion of its Bicentennial. The coin will be struck at the West Point Mint and release of the coin will take place March 16. |
Coin and Stamp March 16, 7:45-8:15 a.m.: Cadets only coin and stamp sales. Cadets must be in uniform to take advantage of this special cadet-only sales period. Sales to the general public begin at 8:30. Both take place in Eisenhower Hall. March 16, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.: West Point Post Office will he open for first day issue of the Bicentennial Stamp. First day cancellations will be available until April 15 at the Post Office. |
TRAFFIC ADVISORY FOR OFF-POST ATTENDEES: Non-West Point residents that are planning to attend the stamp/coin unveiling ceremony March 16 are required to enter the installation through the Stony Lonesome Gate where they will be further directed to G-Lot for parking and shuttled to Eisenhower Hall starting at 7 a.m. Return shuttles will be available following the 10 a.m. ceremony and run on a continuous cycle.

"Mr. Jefferson’s Academy -- the Real Story Behind West Point"
Norman Remick wrote and published this
book in 1998 describing Jefferson’s motivations for establishing the Military
Academy.
"Duty First: West Point and the Making of American Leaders" Ed Ruggero, USMA Class of 1980, authored this insider’s look at how West Point builds leaders of character. The book was published in January 2001.
"The Spirit of West Point: Celebrating 200 Years" An intimate, inside, through-the-years pictorial celebrating the enduring spirit of West Point and the academy. More than 200 photos, maps and illustrations address territorial expansion, cadet life, academics, athletics and more. Written by USMA faculty members Dr. Jon Malinowski and Col. Gene Palka. The authors are donating all royalties to the USMA Association of Graduates, a nonprofit organization.
"The Army" USMA is featured throughout this coffee table-style book. It was published in October 2001 by Hugh Lauter Levin Associations and the Army Historical Foundation.
"West Point, The First 200 Years" This coffee table book is a celebration in words and pictures of the 200-year history of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point -- in all of its tradition, pageantry and academic excellence. Published December 2001.
"Entwined Destinies West Point and the Coastal Empire 1802-2002" This book paints a 200-year panoramic view of the historical linkage between West Point and Georgia’s Coastal Empire. This hardbound 232 page book became available in January and was sponsored by the West Point Society of Savannah as the centerpiece of its 2002 Bicentennial program.
"West Point Bicentennial 1802-2002 A Pictorial History of the First 200 years of USMA." This Public Affairs and Department of History project, 76 pages, will be printed March 16, 2002.
"West Point -- The Bicentennial Book" Since its establishment in 1802, USMA has prepared officers to lead the armed forces of the world’s greatest democracy. This book is a tribute to the institution’s 200 years of tradition. Written by A. VonHassell and Herm Dillon, it will be available this month.
"Duty, Honor, Country: The Bicentennial of the United States Military Academy" Faircount International Press is planning to publish this soft cover book this spring. It will be similar to their recent publication commemorating the Korean War and the 225th birthday of the U.S. Army.
"2002 Commemorative Stamp Yearbook" This book features all of the commemorative stamps issued by the U.S. Postal Service for the year and will include West Point’s Bicentennial Stamp. Available fall 2002.
"The Campus Guide: West Point" This architectural tour of West Point is published by Princeton Architectural Press. It includes written material and photographs and maps of USMA.
"West Point" A collection of black and white photographs taken by Marcia Lippman when she was an artist in residence at USMA in the 1980s.
