Men's tennis falls to Navy 5-2

The Army men’s tennis team won two singles matches and one doubles match but fell to Navy 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Big Vanilla Racquet Club in Annapolis, Md.

Army (7-4) opened the day with a win in the No. 1 doubles match. Brother’s Arnie and Rafael Albornoz started off the day defeating Davy Lee and Ryan Osgood 6-4, 6-2. Navy’s (7-3) Chris McGrath and Todd Thurston defeated senior Sonny Avichal and sophomore Jarrett Skrobarcek, 8-4, in the No. 2 seed. Pushing to extra sets, freshman Josh Jones and sophomore John Sabia fell in the No. 3 doubles match to Cameron Lickle and Phil Voulgaris, 9-7.

Sabia won the No. 2 singles match, 6-4, 7-6 (8) over Osgood. The only other Black Knight winner on the day was freshman Sebastian Salas in the No. 6 seed. Salas used three sets to defeat Voulgaris 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.

Avichal and Skrobarcek each won a set but lost in the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds, respectively. Midshipmen McGrath pushed past Avichal 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 and Thurston beat Skrobarcek 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Junior Arnie Albornoz dropped a 7-6 (3), 6-1, decision to Lickle in the top spot. Sophomore Rafael Albornoz lost to Lee 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles match.

The Black Knights will return to action Sunday at American at 10 a.m. The match will be the first for the two as Patriot League opponents.
