Meyers breaks another personal record in 100-yard freestyle
By Chris Macaluso
Army seniors Mychajlo Eliaszewskyj, Lucas Meyers and Pat Schmidt put the finishing touches on their swimming careers during the third and final day of the EISL Championships at Harvard’s Blodgett Pool Saturday.
Co-captain Meyers broke one more personal record before closing the book on his career at Army, as he finished the 100-yard freestyle race with a time of 45.21. Meyers’ previous record of 45.36 was earned at last year’s EISL championship meet.
Meyers’ final event as a Black Knight was swimming the lead leg for the 400- freestyle relay team, helping them reach a seventh-place finish. Joining him were junior Dan Downs and freshmen freestylers Steve Miller and Richard Babbitt.
During preliminary races March 1, Meyers broke a 12-year-old Army record when he hit the wall at 1:38.63 in the 200-yard freestyle. Phillip Williams held the prior mark of 1:38.96.
For the second consecutive night, the Army breaststroke team captured a number of high scores. Eliaszewskyj was the top-scorer in the 200-breast, placing seventh in the "A" finals with a time of 2:04.86. Joining him in the scoring bracket were senior Pat Schmidt, who placed sixth in the "B" finals and freshman Matthew Krempin, who placed seventh in the "C" finals.
Freshman Sebastian Rodriguez gave the Black Knights a second-place showing in the "C" finals of the 200-yard butterfly. Finishing close behind was sophomore Dennis Zilinski, who placed seventh.
On the final day of competition, the Princeton Tigers won the last five events of the meet and came from behind to win the team title, breaking Harvard’s string of six consecutive EISL championships.
