'Women in the US Army' exhibit on display at WP Museum
Submitted by David M. Reel
Curator of Fine Art and Decorative Art
The West Point Museum unveiled a special display March 1 commemorating the history of women in the United States Army.
Items in the display focus on the contributions of women during the War in Vietnam. More than 265,000 women served in uniform during the war in Vietnam and 11,500 of those women served in-country on active-duty status.
Items of particular note include a bronze sculpture titled "Vietnam Women’s Memorial" by Glenna Goodacre. The sculpture is a new acquisition at the museum and is one of only one hundred in existence. Diane Evans will formally present the sculpture to the academy during the month of March. The original memorial, from which this sculpture was cast, was erected in Washington, D.C., in the Fall of 1993. Other items of interest include uniform pieces and memorabilia that were used by Maj. Julia Kerr of the Army Nurse Corps while on duty in Saigon from 1966-1967. All works of art and historical objects on view have been culled from the collection of the West Point Museum.
The display remains on view throughout the month of March at the West Point Museum.
The West Point Museum is open at no charge to the public, seven days a week, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The Museum is closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
