With a solid pitching performance against Pace Saturday, Justin Kashner continued to build on his highly successful freshman season. Monday, his resume’ grew a bit longer when he was named Patriot League "Rookie of the Week" for the second straight week.
On the heels of a nifty four-hit shutout of Patriot League foe Holy Cross April 29, Kashner continued his stingy ways opposite Pace. The rookie right-hander allowed six hits and no runs over six innings of work in a 2-0 blanking of the Setters, extending his personal scoreless streak to 14.2 innings. He struck out two and walked just one as he raised his overall record three games above the .500 mark.
The native of Effort, Pa., helped the Black Knights post their fourth shutout in five games and induced Pace to ground into a pair of double-plays to secure the victory.
For the season, Kashner has authored a 5-2 record with a 4.60 earned run average. He has registered 33 strikeouts, while yielding only 13 walks. Discounting losses against nationally ranked Florida and Lafayette, Kashner’s ledger reads 5-0 with a 2.15 ERA.
Kashner’s latest citing marks the third consecutive week that an Army player has walked off with the Patriot League’s top rookie honors and the fourth time this spring. Pitcher Wade Greenlee and catcher Schulyer Williamson were similarly honored by the conference earlier this spring.
Army, which has won 12 of its last 13 games, closed out its season with a non-league contest against Albany Wednesday. At 21- 21, the Black Knights can assure themselves of a winning record with a victory against the Great Danes after opening the year at 8-19.
