AOG officials name six for this year's 'Distinguished Graduates Award'

The Association of Graduates of the U.S. Military Academy will honor six graduates for a lifetime of upholding the academy’s motto of "Duty, Honor, Country" during the alumni exercise and review ceremony Tuesday starting at 10:35 a.m. in the Central Post Area.

Selected as this year’s distinguished graduates are retired Gen. and former Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, Arthur E. Brown Jr. (USMA 1953); retired Brig. Gen. and 1958 Heisman Trophy winner Peter M. Dawkins (USMA 1959); former General Dynamics division president James R. Dempsey; (USMA Jan. 1943); retired Gen. and former Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, George A. Joulwan, (USMA 1961); retired Gen. and former Chief of Staff of the Army, Edward C. Meyer, (USMA 1951) and retired Lt. Gen. and 56th Commandant of Cadets Walter F. Ulmer Jr., (USMA 1952).

First awarded in 1992, the Distinguished Graduate Award is presented to USMA graduates whose character, distinguished service and stature reflect positively on the academy and who have supported West Point throughout their lives.

An AOG selection committee selects each year’s awardees from nominations submitted by presidents of West Point societies and classes. The AOG president then gives final approval of the committee’s selections.

Last year’s distinguished graduates were retired Air Force Gen. and former Chief of Staff of the Air Force Charles Alvin Gabriel; retired Lt. Gen. and former U.S. Military Academy Superintendent Howard Dwayne Graves; retired Col. James "Buster" Hayden; General Dynamics’ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stan Pace and retired Gen. George S. Blanchard.
