USMA honors volunteers at quarterly luncheon

The West Point Community honored twelve volunteers at the quarterly spotlight luncheon here May 14th at the West Point Club’s Hudson Room. USMA Superintendent Lt.Gen. William J. Lennox Jr, spoke about the importance of the volunteers to the West Point community.

"We could not do without them," he said. All recognized volunteers received framed certificates of appreciation and Bicentennial Coins. The twelve honored were:

Vicki Olson is active in various organizations here including the West Point Women’s Club where she is an advisor, as well as volunteering for every function. She is also an advisor for the American Red Cross, DUSA and founder of Vision 2002, an organization to enhance the quality of life in and around the West Point area.

Erica Koonmen has been involved in Girl Scouts and O’Neill High School. She was the secretary and chairman of the activities and games for the senior graduation bash at O’Neill. She is the West Point president of the O’Neill Parent Teacher Council and editor of the PTC newsletter. Koonmen has been active in Girl Scouting for more than 22 years.

Carol Weart is the cadet hostess here and president of DUSA. She is a member of the WPWC board serving as the community representative and keeps the membership aware of any and all activities in the community. Weart is active in God’s Gang and a member of Young Life. She is very involved with the West Point Middle School and the O’Neill High School PTO and booster clubs.

Nancy Hannigan works full time at the adjutant general’s office. She volunteers for the Red Cross and lends her considerable computer skills troubleshooting at the Red Cross. Hannigan has been instrumental at blood drives and brings car loads of senior volunteers, who otherwise may not be able to attend, to every Red Cross function.

Sandee Boggess volunteered hundreds of hours for the West Point Museum in the Art Department by photographing and archiving decorative art collections, inventorying and packing. She has assisted the Curator of Arts and Registrar in performing an on-site inventory of all historic property on loan to academic departments here. Boggess helped the museum staff prepare and set-up the museum’s bicentennial exhibition and assisted in research and preparation of artifacts for public exhibition.

Brandon Harper is a senior at O’Neill High School. He is the President of the Keystone Club (a high school leadership group), served as a summer camp counselor for Youth Services and is in the After School Program during the academic year. Brandon has coordinated community service projects including the 2001 MS walk, Special Olympics, food and clothing drive and served at master of ceremonies for the Halloween Fest. He conducted the West Point Regional Prudential Youth Leadership Training for Aberdeen, Edgewood, Fort Monmouth and Picatinny Arsenal. Brandon is the West Point Youth of the Year for both 2001 and 2002

Cadet 1st Class Faith Copeland is an active participant in Navigators, the Post Chapel Choir and Genesis. She is a Protestant Sunday School teacher, reads to elementary school children and is a lead member of the USMA Crew team. Copeland organized the food activities and the space to support 140 people at the company B-3 Christmas party. She has branched into the Signal Corps and will be deployed to Korea on her first assignment.

Ann Taylor has been on the West Point School Board for two years and played a key role in the schools Strategic Action Plan. She volunteers on a weekly basis in her son’s classroom and is an active member of the PTO at West Point School. She has been a Girl Scout leader for her daughter’s troop for the past four years.

Henry and Marion Stevens are dedicated Red Cross Volunteers, traveling more than 140 miles round trip to volunteer at KACH one day a week. This husband and wife volunteer team has been an integral part of everything that makes the outpatient records team successful at Keller, especially during this period of high security concerns.

Catherine Gwinner is one of the co-founders of the Military Council of Catholic Women and is serving as their president. Gwinner served on the Christian Women of the Chapel board as the committee chair for Sonshine (mercy meals) and helped plan the annual Christmas program. She serves as a proclaimer at Most Holy Trinity and she, along with her husband, has been a critical part of the Marriage Preparation team for the parish.

Monique Sanders was presented the Jackie Joyner Kersey award for volunteer service to Girls Youth Sports.
