Playoffs loom; DIA, Band still on top

Staff and Faculty intramural softball play creeps toward the end of the regular season as the playoffs loom next week.

The Directorate of Intercollegiate Athletics did their best to squander most of their two-game first place lead in the North Division with losses to second place Math (16-15) and Admissions (15-5) last week.

Some clutch hitting actually avoided a three-game swoon as DIA rallied to beat History 21-16 in eight innings.

Overall poor defense and a lack of timely hitting saw DIA waste an opportunity to wrap up the division with the two late-week losses.

The top spot is still attainable, but now DIA needs to beat Behavioral Sciences and Leadership and hope Math and the Department of Physical Education both lose.

DPE and Math square off Monday in a make-up game that has serious playoff implications.

DPE holds the tiebreaker over DIA, while Math and DIA would flip a coin to determine a winner if they finished tied.

The Band still waits for anyone to make a run at them in the South Division.

Going into Tuesday’s games MEDDAC is the only team that can still catch the Band, as they would win a tiebreaker if the two finished tied at 10-4.

The league’s make-ups are on track for completion Tuesday, with the playoffs tentatively scheduled for Wednesday.

Behavioral Sciences and Leadership’s Larry Shattuck takes a rip at the ball. At 5-6, BS&L will get a new chance at life when the playoffs begin Wednesday.

Directorate of Information Management’s George Woodbridge throws a pitch during a recent game.
