Straight from the Top:  Have a safe holiday

Commentary by Lt. Gen. William J. Lennox, Jr.
Superintendent

The Labor Day Holiday commemorates the accomplishments of all American workers whose labors have made our nation great. The hard work and dedication on the part of all of our community members have made this a very productive summer and the safety performance has been excellent.

This weekend marks the end of the summer season and traditionally has the highest accident rate of the year.

The old saying that "accidents never take a holiday" is timely. In fact, we are all too well aware that the number of accidents increases tremendously during holiday weekend periods. As you make your plans for the Labor Day Holiday weekend, leaders need to remind our soldiers, staff members, friends and family to observe the following life-protecting safety rules:

If you drink, don’t drive. Be aware of the dangers of driving, boating or swimming after alcohol consumption.

If you are traveling this holiday weekend, ensure that all passengers in the vehicle are using seat belts and children are secured in the proper child restraints.

Be alert to the warning signs of driver fatigue which is one of the leading causes of holiday traffic fatalities.

Commanders and leaders should emphasize the importance of using the risk management process to eliminate the hazard. If you need assistance with the risk management worksheets, contact the USMA Safety Office at 938-3717 or 938-5964. The Safety Office is there is help us make safety a part of everything we do.

Anne and I wish all of you a safe and enjoyable Labor Day.
