Men's Cross Country relies on youth

Going into the 2002 season, the men’s team has its work cut out. Head coach Jerry Quiller lost four productive seniors this past spring and will now rely on every class to make a major contribution to the scoring effort.

Quiller needs everyone in the program to step up his game, especially the underclassmen.

Leading this year’s young squad is senior captain Eric Motzenbecker and classmates Adam Patten and Jon Dreher.

This past spring all three received extended running time as part of Army’s track and field team, and should get faster marks this fall.

The nucleus of the squad is the junior class. Seth Chappel, who is the team’s only returning NCAA qualifier, will be joined by David Fraser, Ahren Reiter and Aaron Smead. As sophomores this class combined for six Top 10 finishes and is expected to produce more of the same results as juniors.

Quiller will be looking to get a complete effort out of the entire team this season, and not any one individual in particular. As with every year, the expectation is to be "the best pack and not at the back."
