Ten champions were crowned Saturday night at the 47th installment of the Brigade Boxing Open. Hundreds of cadets, community members and boxing fans of all ages attended the pugilistic affair at Christl Arena.

Of the 10 champs there were five first-timers, a trio of two-timers, a three- and even rarer still, a four-time champion by evening’s end.

C-1 Crusader senior Boyd Melson won the 165-pound bout to secure his fourth-straight brigade boxing title with a unanimous decision over H-1 Root Hawg sophomore Ryan Boeka.

Melson won the 165-pound title in each of the past two years and claimed the 156-pound title during his freshman year to complete his four-peat.

Melson’s achievement is notable since all open participants now must first complete freshman boxing before competing in the brigade boxing open. This requirement reduces the number of freshman boxers able to take part to those completing the course during the fall semester.

B-4 Buffaloes sophomore Khara Keegan won a unanimous decision over senior company mate Kira Baughman to capture the 125-pound crown. Keegan is the winner of the third-ever women’s crown. Baughman lost the 125-title last year, as well, to two-time winner Erin Searfoss.

The 132-pound title went to F-4 Frogs junior Fred Kim, who earned his third title at that weight, with a unanimous decision over F-3 F-Troop freshman Darren Joyce. Kim stands to equal Melson’s mark next year if he can also four-peat.

Joyce’s company mate junior Gil Taylor-Tyree faired better claiming a unanimous decision at 139 pounds over A-1 Axemen sophomore Geerati Choosang. Taylor-Tyree lost the 139-pound title last year, but won the 147-pound title as a freshman.

A-3 Anacondas freshman Pat Mitchell took home the 147-pound crown with a unanimous decision over A-2 Spartans senior Osmond Cole.

The 156-pound title went to F-4 Frogs senior Marques Bruce who claimed a unanimous decision over A-3 Anacondas freshman Matt Pride.

In the only knockout of the evening E-2 Dawgs junior Amir Bagherpour made quick work of F-1 Firehouse junior Eric Mbog-Hob to win the 175-pound title.

A-1 Axemen senior southpaw Ryan Laughna earned a majority decision at 185 pounds over D-1 Ducks sophomore T.J. Menn.

The 195-pound crown went to G-3 Gophers junior Bobby Greer for the second-straight year as he claimed a majority decision over E-2 Dawgs sophomore Wes Baer.

The heavyweight crown went to E-4 Elvis senior Rob Horton for the second year in a row as he stayed away from G-1 Greeks senior Craig Cunningham long enough to earn a unanimous decision. Cunningham, a former offensive lineman on the Army football team, tried to use his 60-pound weight advantage (285-225) against Horton. The ploy seemed to work except for the fact that the two-time champ was too quick on his feet to get tied up in the corners by his larger opponent.

Cunningham also lost the heavyweight crown as a sophomore.
