Trading the gridiron for gunfire
Quarterback Chad Jenkins hobbled onto the field with a torn knee ligament and took Army to victory over Navy two years ago. In football, that’s what passes for courage and leadership. These days, 2nd Lt. Jenkins commands a 37-man rifle platoon that conducts night patrols, searches for explosive devices, guards an ammunition dump and dodges bullets in one of Iraq’s hottest danger zones. That’s taking bravery to another level.

One cadet, one 2003 grad named Rhodes Scholars
The Rhodes committee announced Nov. 22 that Cadet 1st Class Amber M. Raub and 2nd Lt. Daniel I. Helmer were two of 32 Americans named as Rhodes Scholars this year.
Helmer and Raub are the 81st and 82nd West Pointers to receive Rhodes Scholarships.

Supporting the troops
Despite the heightened tensions of our Soldiers currently in Iraq, off-duty hours can drag on endlessly. Some military members and civilians across the country have done what they can to fill that down time by donating reading materials.
Here at West Point, Maj. Blair Harms, executive officer to the office of the dean, collected a massive stockpile of books and magazines for shipment to the 101st Airborne Division in Northern Iraq.

Elementary school to get new classrooms, parking
As construction wraps up this winter on a new school gymnasium here, construction is about to begin on a new project that will add six new classrooms to the West Point Elementary School.
School officials said they expect work on the three-phase DoDEA-funded project to stretch until Feb. 2005 beginning with the building addition, then the parking lot and finally the bus loop.

Women's basketball's Macfarlane keeps piling up awards and records
For the second week in a row, both the Patriot League and the Army Athletic Association recognized senior co-captain Katie Macfarlane for her outstanding play at the Third Annual North Star Invitational hosted by Alaska Fairbanks. Macfarlane earns her second "Player of the Week" accolade by the Patriot League selection committee, as well as back-to-back nods as the AAA "Athlete of the Week."
