Army boxing edges Navy 7-6

The Army boxing team rallied to edge Navy 7-6 Saturday at Hayes Gym before a raucous crowd of 300. The win was the Black Knights’ first ever against their rival, Navy.
The 13-bout card came down to the final round of the final bout as Army junior heavyweight Wes Baer earned a majority decision (3-2) over his Navy counterpart Dan Brendel.
After 11 bouts Navy stood one win away from sealing the contest as they ripped off three wins in a row using the veteran experience of two of their three returning All-Americans.

The three-bout streak erased a 5-3 Army lead after the Black Knight’s young squad won the middle four bouts, three unanimously (5-0).
The first female boxing match between Army and Navy kicked off the afternoon’s festivities when Army freshman 125-pounder Amelia Childress earned a unanimous decision over Mid junior Maia Molina Schaefer.

Midshipmen won the next three bouts taking the first three men’s weight classes at 125, 135 and 144 pounds.
Black Knight senior Gil Taylor-Tyree snapped that string with his unanimous decision over Navy junior Fernando Garcia at 145 pounds pulling Army back to within one at 3-2.
Army sophomore Pat Mitchell evened things up with a majority decision at 150 pounds over Mid junior Adrian Evangelista.
West Point took the lead at 4-3 when sophomore Matt Pride pounded Navy junior Luke Im at 155 pounds for a unanimous decision.
Army junior Brian McReynolds extended the run to 5-3 with his unanimous decision over Mid freshman Franklin Hernandez at 160 pounds.

Navy won the three classes with dominant performances to pull within sight of victory.
Army sophomore Tom Payne stemmed the Navy run to glory with a majority decision at 198 pounds over Navy senior Dale Crowner to even things at 6-all and set the stage for Baer to pull out the win.
“This is a great win for Army boxing,” Army boxing coach Capt. Jerry Hart said afterwards. “I was expecting a lot of tough matches and that’s exactly what happened.
“They brought three returning All-Americans and we sent none up there against them,” he added. “We only had one returning All-American. So I thought our boxers rose to the occasion.
“I was afraid in the third round(s) that they might be in better condition and that didn’t happen,” Hart continued. “We showed them in the third round what Army boxing is all about. I think we are a program that’s on the rise and we’re going to challenge for a national title shortly.”
