Army’s women’s tennis team has accepted an invitation to compete in the 2002 ECAC Women’s Invitational Tennis Championships Oct. 12-14 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
The Black Knight’s strong showing in early season tourneys helped them qualify.
Considered one of tennis’ most prestigious events, the ECAC Championships brings together 16 of the top teams in the East. The Black Knights are making their third consecutive trip to this tournament and are unseeded. The top eight seeds, in order, are: Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Brown, Boston College, Boston University, Cornell and Columbia. The remaining participants include Dartmouth, Georgetown, George Washington, James Madison, Rutgers and UConn. The final team will be released at a later date upon confirmation.
In last year’s ECAC Championships Army posted a 1-2 record, beating James Madison 4-3, but losing to both Virginia and Boston University 7-0. Harvard is the defending champion after they defeated Pennsylvania 7-0 in the finals last year.
In their first appearance in the ECAC Championships in 2000, Army finished 16th.
Head coach Paul Peck is excited about the opportunity to participate at the ECAC Championships. "I think we have the opportunity to compete. We are probably one of the top ten teams in the field," said Peck.
Sunday, after being delayed a day because of rain, the Quinnipiac Invitational wrapped up play. Army had success in Flight A doubles with the team of sophomore Marissa Limsiaco and freshman Cristina Lucin winning their first round match.
This marked the first time this season that Limsiaco and Lucin, played doubles together. The Black Knight tandem beat a duo from Binghamton 8-0 in the first round before losing to Quinnipiac 8-1 in the second round.
After getting off to a rough start in singles play, the Black Knights were able to recover and post five wins in the singles consolation brackets. Senior captain Annie Collier and freshman Megan Noble both won a match in the Flight A consolation bracket while Lucin handed an 8-1 loss to her opponent in the Flight B consolation bracket. In the Flight C consolation bracket sophomore Pam Chavez and classmate Lyndsey Nott both advanced. None of the consolation brackets were played in their entirety, so no champions were crowned.
