FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RELEASE NO. 22-08
MEN’S TEAM HANDBALL WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP – April 9, 2008
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Last weekend, the Army Black Men’s Team Handball Team cruised to its second consecutive College National Championship. The team went 5-0 over the weekend and played its best team handball of the year, according to team officer-in-charge and Coach Maj. Chris Springer, an assistant professor in the Department of Social Sciences here.
In the process, Army Black beat Air Force 30-19 in front of a boisterous crowd April 4, avenging a loss to the Falcons two weeks earlier. In the gold medal game, Army Black beat a tough North Carolina team 24-21.
Army Black players seniors Adam Kenyon and Keith Fine were voted the tournament Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Goalie, respectively. Junior Justin Key scored 23 goals throughout the tournament to lead all Army Black scorers.
The Army Gold Men’s Team played for the bronze medal after losing several close games, which they controlled most of the way, and finished in fourth place. Army Gold lost close games to both Air Force and UNC, but lost late leads in both games.
The fact that they played those two teams very well and played for third place indicates that they have dramatically improved over the course of the year. The top Army Gold scorers were sophomore TJ Giordano, who had 16 goals over the weekend. Also, sophomore Dexter Wise and freshman Tim Wagner were both excellent in net.
