JUDO TEAM WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP – April 02, 2009

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The West Point Judo Team won the National Team Championship title in the senior collegiate division at the USA Judo Youth and Scholastic National Championships in York, Pa. on Saturday.  

The tournament drew athletes from 10 colleges and universities around the nation, including teams from Iowa State University, University of Tennessee and Penn State University.

West Point won 12 total medals overall, the men's team earned seven medals while the women brought home five. 

Cadet Matt Song, Class of 2010, took home the gold medal with three wins in the 81kg division as well as an additional victory in an exhibition goodwill match against a traveling team from Puerto Rico.  In the heavyweight division, Cadet Andrew Fant, Class of 2011 won his two matches in dominating fashion and took home the gold.  In the women’s division Cadet Yinchao Xie, Class of 2009 took home the gold in the 57kg division.

“This event concluded the team’s strong competition run this year,” said Maj. Ben Ring, Judo team coach.
