ESPNU TO HONOR ARMY WITH DAY OF GAMES – June 12, 2009
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Fire up those VCRs, TiVos and other video recording devices Army fans.
In honor of the 234th birthday of the U.S. Army and the 228th birthday of the American Flag, ESPNU will re-broadcast 10 of the most memorable Army athletic events in recent history Saturday. The ESPNU “stunt” will begin at 1:30 a.m. with the Army football team’s tight loss to Auburn in the 1996 Poulan/Weed Eater Independence Bowl. The massive programming block will conclude nearly 18 hours later when the Black Knights’ historic 9-6 lacrosse defeat of Navy is televised, beginning at 8 p.m.
Included in the Flag Day special are four of the most riveting Army-Navy football games in series history. In succession, ESPNU will re-broadcast all four games during the four-year stretch from 1992 through 1995. Those four contests were decided by a total 10 points and all resulted in Army victories.
The Black Knights’ men’s basketball defeat of Navy from this past season, Army’s 2006 women’s basketball overtime victory against Navy, the 2008 Brigade Boxing Open and the football team’s improbable come-from-behind, overtime defeat of Tulane from last October will also be featured.
