WEST POINT CADET CHEMICAL ENGINEERING CLUB HONORED – June 19, 2009
WEST POINT, N.Y. –The West Point cadet Chemical Engineering Club was honored recently by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers with the Platinum award for schools with more than 90 percent enrollment of their declared Chemical Engineering majors.
West Point, which has only had the major for five years, reached 100 percent enrollment, with all 47 members enrolling. The West Point student chapter was one of only 20 Platinum winners for 2009, out of the 160 student chapters nationally.
The cadet student chapter will be honored at the annual AIChE National Student Conference Nov. 6-9 in Nashville, Tenn.
Some of the benefits student members of the AIChE enjoy come from AIChE professional organizations, in particular the Tappan Zee and the New York City Sections.
“The cadets also can take advantage of different guest speakers that come to the Department of Chemistry and Life Science,” said Lt. Col. Robert Bozic, club officer-in-charge and a C&LS Assistant Professor. “During the spring term (this past year) we had Col. Dietrich visit. He was Chief of Oil while deployed in Iraq and was instrumental in establishing the Energy Fusion Cell in Iraq. He currently works for Conoco Phillips Bayway Refinery.”
Members of the club are also eligible to attend the national student convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Student membership also provides the club members access to RSS, podcasts, blogs, and Chemical Engineering Progress online and the AIChE eLibrary. Membership provides cadets with more information on chemical engineers and engineering technology than any other source.
Upcoming events for the West Point Chemical Engineering Club include a trip and factory tour in Hershey, Pa., Sept. 23-25; a tailgate Oct. 10 titled “It will be Dandy when we Beat Vandy” before the Army-Vanderbilt football game here; and the AIChE Annual Student Conference in Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 6-9.
