MATHEMATIC DEPARTMENT
The Mathematics' curriculum is comprised of three tracks to meet the needs of different levels of previous preparation and achievement. The CCs are prepared for the curriculum at USMA through the use of the mathematic's program Mathematica, which is an integral part of the higher calculus prospectus.

Placement in a particular track is based on performance which is assessed from the diagnostic tests administered prior to the school year beginning, the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and ACT (American College Test), and previous mathematics experience.

Mathematics Track One - Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus

Track one follows the syllabus of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) as administered by the Educational Testing Services (ETS). The AP course in mathematics consists of a full academic year of work in calculus and related topics comparable to courses in colleges and universities. The AP program is either AB/BC calculus. Prerequisites for this track are 70% or better on the Initial Gateway Examination, exceptional previous preparation as demonstrated on the first quarter diagnostic examination and above-average results on standardized tests.

Mathematics Track Two -Honors Mathematics/Introduction to Calculus with Application

This track is for Cadet Candidates with a strong mathematics background and diagnostic scores , but who are not yet ready to enter the AP Calculus course. Course work during the first two quarters will review algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus topics and introduce selected topics in discrete mathematics and data analysis. The third and fourth quarters include a study of applications of differential calculus and an introduction to integral calculus. Prerequisites for this track are strong previous preparation as demonstrated by both the first-quarter diagnostic examination and average results on standardized tests.

Mathematics Track Three - Application of Algebra, Trigonometry, and an Introduction to Differential Calculus

This course is for Cadet Candidates with an average mathematics background and diagnostic scores who need to solidify their mathematics fundamentals before they begin to study calculus. This is the standard course that the majority of the Cadet Candidates will take. It is a thorough review and extension of the fundamentals and applications of algebra and trigonometry, followed by a fourth quarter of introduction to differential calculus and its applications. The prerequisite for this course is a satisfactory performance on the first-quarter diagnostic examination.
