MSG Harry Ditzel
Horn

Master Sergeant Harry F. Ditzel, from Allentown, Pennsylvania, is the principal hornist in the Concert Band and a member of the Heritage Brass Quintet.  He also holds the third horn position with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and is an active soloist and chamber music performer throughout the Northeast.  In 2000, he played the world premiere performance of Joseph Bertolozzi’s The Contemplation of Bravery for solo horn and band.  He has performed with such artists as James Taylor, Roberta Flack, Moody Blues, ELO (Electric Light Orchestra, Robert Goulet and Tony Randall; and recorded with Jay Ansill, Richard Schulman, John Cale, Danielle Woerner and the Albany Symphony Orchestra.  He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in performance from the New School of Music in Philadelphia where he studied with Randy Gardner and A. Kendall Betts.

SFC Troy Messner
Horn

Sergeant First Class Troy Messner hails from Lakeland, Florida and began playing the horn at the age of twelve.  Soon after his graduation from high school in 1986, he joined the United States Marine Corps.  After a tour in the Fleet Marine Forces Pacific Band located in Marine Barracks, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, SFC Messner left the Marines to pursue studies in horn performance.  Before and after graduating from the University of South Florida in Tampa, SFC Messner was principal horn with the Imperial Symphony of Lakeland, fourth horn with the Florida West Coast Symphony and fourth horn with the Brevard Symphony.  He substituted with the Naples Philharmonic, the Southwest Florida Symphony and the Orlando Symphony.  He also performed with the touring Broadway shows Miss Saigon, Sunset Blvd, Buskers, Carousel and Beauty and the Beast among others.  In 1998 SFC Messner returned to the Marine Corps, but soon after, joined the United States Military Academy Band in September of 1999.

SSG Nicholas Caluori
Horn

A native of Springfield, Virginia, Staff Sergeant Nicholas Caluori holds a Bachelor of Music in Horn Performance from Florida State University, where he studied with William Capps and a Master of Music from Southern Methodist University, where he studied with Greg Hustis.  His undergraduate honors thesis, The Musical Life of Lorenzo Sansone, was published in the February 2005 edition of The Horn Call.

At the age of 15, Staff Sgt. Caluori won a fellowship with the National Symphony Orchestra and is also the inaugural winner of the International Horn Society Barry Tuckwell Scholarship. In August of 2005, Staff Sgt. Caluori placed second in the University Division of the International Horn Competition of America. Prior to joining the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point in August of 2006, Staff Sgt. Caluori performed with the Dallas, Jacksonville and Tallahassee Symphony Orchestras. He has also played with the National Repertory Orchestra, National Orchestral Institute and Voices of Change, the award-winning modern chamber music ensemble in Dallas, Texas. His principal teachers have also included Edwin C. Thayer, Kendall Betts, Kevin Reid, and his father, Marco Caluori of the U.S. Army Band.

SSG Joshua Phillips
Horn

Staff Sergeant Joshua Phillips is originally from Newfoundland, New Jersey and joined the U.S. Military Academy Concert Band in February of 2006.  Staff Sgt. Phillips holds a Bachelor of Music with an Outside Field (B.M.O.) in Multimedia Design from Ithaca College and finished his graduate studies at Northwestern University in the Spring of 2005.  He has studied with Jerry Peel, Alex Shuhan, William Barnewitz and Gail Williams.  Staff Sgt. Phillips has been a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra. He has also appeared with the International Contemporary Ensemble and Rhythm and Brass.
