Hudson Highlands Trombone Ensemble The Hudson Highlands Trombone Ensemble was formed in October of 2005. It is comprised of members of the USMA Concert Band and Jazz Knights, and performs music from all genres. Although primarily a quartet, they will add members to accommodate larger trombone works and percussion to facilitate their flexibility. MASTER SERGEANT RONALD FLEISCHMANN is from Darlington, Pennsylvania and came to the Academy band in February of 1996. He holds a bachelor's degree from Duquesne University and a master's degree from Youngstown State University. Since joining the Army in 1992, MSG Fleischman attended the Army Element, School of Music and performed in the band at Ft. Gordon, Georgia. Additionally, he has played with the Augusta Symphony Orchestra. MSG Fleischman also performs with the West Point Dixie Players. MASTER SERGEANT MARTIN TYCE is from Rock Springs, Wyoming. He became a member of the USMA Band in 1989 after receiving his bachelor of arts degree in music performance from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. Marty has studied with Mr. Joseph Alessi, principal trombonist on the New York Philharmonic and is currently studying with Mr. Matt Ingman, in New York City. He completed a master's degree in counseling from Long Island University, C.W. Post, in 1996. Additionally, Marty is currently an adjunct faculty member at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, directing the brass and jazz ensembles. SERGEANT FIRST CLASS TEDDY ARNOLD is currently the bass trombonist for the Jazz Knights, a position he has held since September of 2001. A native of Jacksonville, Florida, SFC Arnold entered the Army in 1985. His military service has taken him around the globe in performance with many Army bands. His assignments have included the United States Army Band & Chorus, based in Heidelberg, Germany; the 82nd Airborne Division Band at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and the former 14th Army Band at Ft. McClellan, Alabama. In 1989, SFC Arnold was an Honor Graduate of the Armed Forces School of Music at Little Creek, VA. He also attended Methodist College and Fayetteville State University studying music. SFC Arnold has studied with Telarc recording artist Steve Turre (Saturday Night Live), Slide Hampton (World of Trombones), Douglas Purviance (Vanguard Jazz Orchestra) and Benny Powell (formally of the Count Basie Orchestra). He has performed with many artists in various styles to include Latin, Broadway shows and jazz. STAFF SERGEANT DANIEL PIERCE grew up in Slingerlands, NY and Pepper Pike, OH and joined the Jazz Knights in Fall of 2006. He earned a Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music from DePaul University. As a four-year member of the Eastman Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Fred Sturm and Bill Dobbins, he had the privilege to perform with guest artists including Maria Schneider, Bobby McFerrin, Vince Mendoza, Toots Thielmans, Tim Hagans, Bill Holman and Clare Fischer. SSG Pierce has studied with Paul Ferguson, John Marcellus, Mark Kellogg, Mark Fisher and Charles Vernon. His performing credits include the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Pops Series with Doc Severinsen, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra, Dave Rivello Ensemble, Bob Perna and Persistance, and Cunard Cruise Lines. STAFF SERGEANT PHILIP STEHLY joined the Academy Band in the summer of 2005. A native of Kansas City, he received a Bachelor of Music in trombone performance from Indiana University. While at Indiana, he was the principal trombonist of the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Ray Cramer. SSG Stehly has also performed with the IU New Music Ensemble, IU Symphony Orchestras and the Bloomington Camerata. His principal teachers are Roger Oyster of the Kansas City Symphony, and Dee Stewart and Peter Ellefson of Indiana University.
