West Point Tuba Quartet

The West Point Tuba Quartet is one of several chamber ensembles comprising members of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, New York.  The quartet was formed in April of 1988 with the purpose of expanding public awareness of the solo capacity and flexibility of low brass instruments, and performing the ever-expanding repertoire of tuba ensemble music.

With music ranging from Renaissance madrigals to ragtime tunes, from marches to original tuba compositions, the quartet has entertained and delighted audiences with the lush, harmonious sounds emanating from these instruments.  The Woodstock Times called the group, "An ensemble... virtuosic in line and tone."

The quartet has performed at such prestigious events as the U.S. Army Band's Tuba-Euphonium Conference at Ft. Meyer, Virginia in 1989 and 1994 and at the Eastern National T.U.B.A. Conference in Washington, DC in 1989.

Each musician of the quartet had a rich and varied background of performance and academic experience prior to his selection, through personal audition, for duty with the famed U.S. Military Academy Band.   Each member of the ensemble serves as active-duty Army bandsman with the Military Academy Concert and Marching Bands.

The West Point Tuba Quartet is representative of the high quality of music in the U.S. Army today.

MASTER SERGEANT GERALD CATES - TUBA, has been a member of the U.S. Military Academy Band since June of 1989.  He received a Bachelor's degree from Tennessee Technological University in 1985 and a Master's degree from the University of Illinois in 1986.  Prior to joining the band, MSG Cates was the Director of Bands for the Marshall County Public Schools in Lewisburg, Tennessee.  In addition to being in the Tuba Quartet, MSG Cates is also a member of the Regimental Brass Quintet and the West Point Dixie Players.

SERGEANT FIRST CLASS BARRY MORRISON - EUPHONIUM, hails from Montgomery, Alabama and joined the U.S. Military Academy Band in April of 1987.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from the University of Alabama and a Master of Music degree from East Texas State University.  Prior to joining the band, SFC Morrison taught in the public schools of Alabama and Texas.  When not performing his Army duties, he serves as conductor of the Southern Dutchess Pops Orchestra and the Rhinebeck Legion Band.

STAFF SERGEANT SCOTT BEAVER - TUBA, joined the U.S. Military Academy Band in May of 2005.  Prior to joining the band, Scott was a member of the New Mexico Brass Quintet.  He holds an undergraduate degree from Tennessee Tech University, where he studied with R. Winston Morris, and is currently finishing his Master's degree at the University of New Mexico where he studies with Karl Hinterbichler.  He is a recent winner of the University of New Mexico Concerto Competition, the Arapahoe Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, as well as the top wind player in the Kingsville Concerto Competition.

STAFF SERGEANT JASON HAM - EUPHONIUM, is among a new generation of musicians appearing on the American military band scene.  A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Jason began his studies as a student of Ronald Davis.  After multiple appearances in the South Carolina All-State Bands, he attended the University of Georgia, where he studied with the late David Randolph, Ken Kroesche and David Zerkel.  In 2001, Jason graduated from UGA, obtaining degrees in both Music Education and Music Performance.

While at UGA, Jason was an active competitor on the euphonium, winning the Atlanta Brass Society Solo Competition, the Atlanta Community Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition and the Solo Euphonium Artist Competition at the 2001 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference (ITEC) in Lahti, Finland.  He has placed in the MTNA Collegiate Brass Competition, the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Competition, the International Philip Jones Competition and the Tuba Quartet Competition at the 2000 ITEC, held in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

In 1995, Jason attended the summer session of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH) in Greenville, South Carolina, where he was an honors recitalist, guest conductor of the Governor's School Orchestra and the recipient of the school's highest award, the Callie S. Rainey Award.  From 1996 to 2001, Jason served on the faculty of the SCGSAH, culminating as the Vice Principal for the Summer Program.  Now advising similar programs in the northeastern United States, he remains an outspoken supporter of the school, which is now a nine-month residential academy for gifted and talented students in South Carolina.

Since entering the USMA Band in 2002, Jason has maintained an active performance schedule, both in and out of the band.  In 2003, he performed and presented master classes at tuba-euphonium conferences, colleges and universities, and several music festivals, including the Hudson River Regional Festival and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, USA, held in Charleston, South Carolina.
