DiMartino opens 2006 Concert Season

Trumpeter Vincent DiMartino will perform
with the Concert Band and Jazz Knights on January 20th, 2006 in
Eisenhower Hall Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Mr. DiMartino has performed
worldwide as a soloist and with artists such as Henry Mancini, Doc
Severinsen, Dizzy Gillespie and Dave Brubeck. Widely admired for
both his classical and jazz playing, recently he has begun to specialize
in virtuoso cornet solos, which were the trademarks of the great turn of
the century cornetists Herbert L. Clarke and Herman Bellstedt.
DiMartino has performed as a soloist with the Cincinnati, Buffalo and
Rochester Symphonies, and is prominently featured in many recordings of
the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. In addition to his performance with
both the Concert Band and Jazz Knights, Mr. DiMartino will perform a
solo trumpet and cornet recital at the West Point Cadet Chapel on
January 22nd at 3:00 p.m.
Cobham to perform with the Jazz Knights

On February 10th, 2006 the United States
Military Academy Band Jazz Knights will perform with yet another guest
artist in the beautiful Eisenhower Hall Theatre at 8:00 p.m. For
this performance, the band will feature the great drummer Billy Cobham.
Jazz drummer Billy Cobham is one of a handful of artists who is revered
throughout the world as one of the most influential masters of his
genre. For over 30 years he has received international acclaim for
his dazzling skills as a percussionist. He is also an accomplished
composer and record producer. Hundreds of recordings with his own
groups and some of music’s most luminary artists bear his trademark –
biggest, fastest, explosive drumming. Mr. Cobham’s artistry has
energized international stages of concerts, symphonies, big bands,
Broadway, jazz festivals, television and video. He also shares the
knowledge of his craft through drum clinics, conducting workshops and
symposia around the globe.

“Reflections from Space” at Army/Navy
At the Army/Navy football classic this
past December 2005 in Philadelphia, the U.S. Military Academy Band
performed a special halftime show entitled "Reflections from Space"
honoring the 18 Military Academy graduates who became astronauts.
The multi-media production, produced by Sgt. 1st Class Deric Milligan
and Staff Sgt. Eric Miller, featured video footage of each of the 18
astronauts which was broadcast on the big television screens at Lincoln
Financial Field. Eleven of the astronauts attended the Army/Navy
game that weekend, and were invited onto the field after the video
introductions. Apollo astronauts “Buzz” Aldrin, Frank Borman and
Al Worden were asked to share their "Reflections from Space" during the
show. The band underscored the event with the heroic music of
Dmitri Shostakovich's Festive Overture, excerpts from The
Planets, by Gustav Holst, and music from the movie Apollo 13
and cable series From the Earth to the Moon.
Of the 18 USMA veteran astronauts, these
eleven shared the field with the Military Academy Band at the game:
retired Col. Jim Adamson, class of 1969; retired Col. (Dr.) Buzz Aldrin,
class of 1951; retired Col. Frank Borman, class of 1950; retired Col.
Patrick Forrester, class of 1979; retired Lt. Col. Sam Gemar, class of
1979; Maj. Shane Kimbrough, class of 1989; Lt. Col. Timothy Kopra, class
of 1985; retired Col. Mike Mullane, class of 1967; Col. Douglas Wheelock,
class of 1983; Col. Jeffrey Williams, class of 1980; and retired Lt.
Col. Al Worden, class of 1955.

Did you know? Did you know that the U.S. Military Academy Band once
had a string orchestra? String players doubled on traditional band
instruments and played in the Concert Band, Marching Band and the
Hellcats. Above is a photo of the Military Academy String
Orchestra (early 1940s) with Teacher of Music Capt. Francis Resta
pictured as conductor.
Young Artist Concert April 2006
On Sunday, April 9th at 3:00 p.m., the
United States Military Academy Concert Band, under the direction of
Captain Treg E. Ancelet, will present its annual Young Artist Concert.
This concert will feature the winners of the U.S. Military Academy
Band’s Young Artists’ Solo Competition. This year’s soloists will
be selected based upon auditions which will take place late in the
winter of 2006.
This young artist competition was
introduced in 1993 by Sgt. Maj. (ret) Joel Evans to provide high school
students from the Hudson Valley with the opportunity to showcase their
musical skills. Brass, woodwind, string, percussion and piano
participants perform selected repertoire with piano accompaniment for a
panel of adjudicators from the Academy Band. Only the finest
performers are selected from this audition process to perform as
soloists with the U.S. Military Academy Concert Band.
Students interested in participating in
this year’s competition may contact Staff Sgt. Diana Cassar-Uhl via the
Academy Band’s website at
diana.cassar-uhl@usma.edu or phone 845-938-2445 for specific
information.

The United States Military Academy
celebrated its bicentennial during the 2001 - 2002 academic year.
The theme "Duty-Honor-Country: West Point at 200 Years - Timeless
Leadership," is exemplified by the Academy Band's proud, continuous
service at West Point. The band celebrated this singular occasion
through a myriad of events. Among those was the commissioning of
new works by renowned composers.
The tradition of commissioning pieces
began with the academy's sesquicentennial in 1952. Captain Francis
Resta, the band's commander, encouraged prominent composers of the day
to write for the Academy Band. His efforts yielded works by Robert
Russell Bennett, Henry Cowell, Roy Harris, Erik Leidzen, Darius Milhaud,
William Grant Still and Morton Gould. Just as the Academy Band
contributed to band repertoire through the sesquicentennial works, the
bicentennial commissions continue this legacy and leave an indelible
mark on the world of wind music. Currently, all six volumes of
recordings of the bicentennial commissions are available for free
download on the Academy Band's website. All of the recordings have
been converted to .mp3 format for easy public download. All of the
liner notes from each recording are also available on the band's
website.
