About The Bicentennial Staff
The Bicentennial Staff is made up of two separate and
distinct entities. These entities work together to plan,
coordinate and execute the bicentennial celebration for the
United States Military Academy.
The first is the Bicentennial Steering Group which
was created on November 10, 1988, by the then
Superintendent Lieutenant General Dave R. Palmer and the chairman of the
Associate of Graduates General (R) Michael S. Davison.
This group was established to start preparation and
planning the events for the Bicentennial Celebration.
It is comprised of USMA graduates and friends of
the Academy, and is broken down into several Sub-Committees.
These are the Art, Coin, Congressional and
White House Liaison, International Liaison,
Mid-Hudson Valley Coordination Group, Music, Publication,
Stamp, and Telecommunications Committees.
Each one consists of volunteers that are contributing
time and effort to the Bicentennial Celebration.
The second entity is the Bicentennial Celebration
Office. This office was created by the United States
Military Academy and supported by the U.S. Army to
oversee and execute the USMA celebration of the
Bicentennial. It is a temporary office and will be
disbanded at the conclusion of the Bicentennial
Celebration. This office consists of a director,
a deputy director and an administrative assistant.
The purpose of the office is to plan, coordinate,
synchronize, and execute all Academy events that occur
at West Point. The Bicentennial Celebration Office
is also tasked with monitoring events which occur at
different locations other than West Point.
