New Mess Hall (later renamed Grant Hall) completed.
1854
The West Point Museum founded.
The Military Academys course of study lengthened from four to five years.
1857
Act of Congress authorizes the appointment of a Professor of Spanish.
1858
The course of study returns to four years. In 1859, it goes back to five years, but two years later,
in 1861, it returns to four years.

1861-1865
Performance of Military Academy graduates in the Civil War establishes the institution in the
national consciousness. The Academy provides over 400 generals to lead both the North and
South.
1866
Act of Congress provides that the Superintendent of the Military Academy may "hereafter be
selected, and the officers on duty at the Institution detailed from any arm of the service."
This action removes the Academy from the supervision and control of the Corps of Engineers.
1868
Dedication of the statue erected in memory of Major General John Sedgwick, commander of the
Sixth Army Corps, who fell in the Battle of Spotsylvania.
1869
Meeting held to organize the Association of Graduates of the U.S. Military Academy.

Henry O. Flipper from Georgia becomes the first African-American to graduate from the Academy.
1879
Superintendent John Schofield delivers an address including a
"definition of discipline" to the Corps of Cadets.

Y.M.C.A. branch formed at West Point.
1883
Thayer Monument dedicated to Colonel Sylvanus Thayer, the "Father of the Military Academy."
1884
Howitzer first published.
1885
Herman J. Koehler, later called the "Father of Army Physical Education," is appointed Master of
the Sword.
1887
Cadet Dining Hall named Grant Hall.

First Army-Navy football game.
1895
West Academic Building completed. Pershing Barracks now located on the site.
1897
Battle Monument dedicated.
1898
West Point motto, "Duty, Honor, Country" selected;
Coat of Arms and Academy seal adopted.
Cullum Memorial Hall completed.
1899
The colors black, gold and gray are adopted as the colors of the
Academy for use in all athletic games.
