2002 Commemorative Stamp Yearbook- This book features all the
commemorative stamps issued by the U.S. Postal Service for the year. West Point's
Bicentennial Stamp will be one of the featured stamps that will be highlighted in a special profile.
Published by Harper Collins, the book should be available in the fall of 2002.
West Point, Two Centuries of Honor and Tradition-
Published by Warner Books with contributions from world renowned writers and historians:
Arthur Miller, Stephen Ambrose, Hugh Sidey, and David Halberstam, to name a few.
Since West Point's founding on March 16, 1802, the academy's rich heritage has
helped write the history of the United States. The book consists of 302 pages with
400 photos and illustrations. A special edition for West Point graduates, cadets, families,
and friends will also be available. This book was released in May 2002.

The Power and the Glory - Commemorating the June 1
graduation of West Point’s Bicentennial Class of 2002, LIFE resurrects a moving
photo essay about the academy, by legendary LIFE photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt,
from LIFE’s second-ever issue in November 1936. Also included are USMA class photos
of Douglas MacArthur, George S. Patton, Dwight D. Eisenhower and H. Norman
Schwarzkopf, and an introduction written by Senator Bob Dole.

Duty, Honor, Country:
The Bicentennial of the United States Military Academy- Faircount
International Press published this soft cover book
in the spring of 2002. It will be similar to their recent
publications commemorating the Korean War and the 225th
Birthday of the US Army.
West Point Bicentennial 1802-2002- Pictorial
history of the first 200 years of the United States Military Academy. This
Public Affairs and Department of History project, approximately 60 pages, was printed in March 2002.
David Lipsky is working on a non-fiction book to be
published by Houghton Mifflin. Mr. Lipsky has
spent an extensive amount of time at West Point, and his book
promises to provide an in-depth look at cadet life and the
Academy today.
West Point - The Bicentennial Book- Since its establishment
in 1802, the United States Military Academy has prepared officers to lead the
armed forces of the world's greatest democracy. This book, written by A. VonHassell and
Herm Dillon, is a magnificent illustrated tribute to the institution's two hundred years of
tradition. Published by Howell Press, the book was made available in March, 2002. Click here

West Point - A Bicentennial History - Authored by Theodore Crackel, one of
the nation's premier authorities on the Academy, this book celebrates one of America's
most prominent establishments. A revision and refinement of the author's earlier Illustrated
History of West Point, published more than ten years ago, it provides the most accurate and
comprehensive history yet available on the Academy. This book was published in March 2002 by
University Press of Kansas.

Entwined Destinies West Point and the Coastal Empire 1802-2002-
This book paints a 200-year panoramic view of the historical linkage between
West Point and Georgia's Coastal Empire. Historian and journalist James Mack Adams
has written a definitive work that illuminates how these national treasures have intersected
on the historical timeline again and again. The hardbound 232 page book, available in January 2002, was sponsored
by the West Point Society of Savannah as the centerpiece of its 2002 Bicentennial program.

celebration of the bicentennial of USMA in 2002, this book presents 200 West Point graduates who

This architectural tour of West Point was published in December, 2001 by the Princeton Architectural Press.

The Spirit of West Point: Celebrating 200 Years-
An intimate, inside, through-the years pictorial celebrating
the enduring spirit of West Point and the Academy. Over 200 photos,
maps, and illustrations address territorial expansion, cadet
life, academics, athletics, architecture, summer training,
monuments, famous graduates and guests, and perceptions of
West Point over the past two centuries. Written by USMA faculty
members Dr Jon Malinowski and COL Gene Palka with original
illustrations by Robert Getz. Published in early October 2001 by
Black Dome Press. The authors are donating all royalties to the USMA
Association of Graduates, a non-profit organization.

the Real Story behind West Point
- Norman Remick wrote and published this book in 1998 describing Jefferson's
motivations for establishing the Military Academy.
Other Leaders, Other Heroes
- Prior to its publication in December 1998, Other Leaders, Other Heroes, written by
James R. Endler, was designated an Official Bicentennial Publication and awarded
the Bicentennial Seal. The book recounts the two hundred years of significant
non-combat contributions made by West Point's
Long Gray Line to the growth and development of the United States. It's subtitle,
"West Point's Legacy to America Beyond the Field of Battle," is dramatically
reflected in the many achievements of its graduates that are recorded within its pages.

Bill Moyers produced a four-hour documentary
for PBS titled "America's First River: Bill Moyers on the Hudson," which
was aired on April 23 and April 24, 2002.
The first two hours of the program focused on the history of the Hudson Valley including West Point, and the second
two hours centered on the environmental movement to
restore the river. The program included the role of
West Point in the Revolutionary War, the founding of the
Academy and West Point's continued contributions to the Nation.
Celebrating West Point in Film was a series of films celebrating West Point.
Shown at Eisenhower Hall, the series began running October 16, 2001. The final film,
"The West Point Story" was shown on Tuesday, April 30, 2002.
"Be Your Own Hero: Call to Duty" -
On May 31st at 7 p.m. Lifetime TV aired a one hour special on women in the military.
West Point Cadet Nina Cuevas was part of the hour long documentary.
This segment featured a day in the life of a new West Point cadet, what it
takes to get in, what it takes to get through. Other stories profiled
women serving in Korea as Commanders, on guard duty in Afghanistan and a female
soldier working with chemical warfare research among others.
American Icons: West Point a special one-hour Travel Channel
presentation, takes viewers behind the Gothic stone walls of West Point
to a world beyond the tour bus and tells the stories of some of the
Academy's most illustrious graduates. The third special in the AMERICAN
ICON series, the program had its world premiere on Sunday,
June 16, 9-10 p.m. ET/PT and repeated on Saturday, June 22, 9-10 p.m. ET/PT.
THE LONG GRAY LINE: The Spirit of West Point was a two hour documentary special
aired on Monday, July 22 on the History Channel. A year in the making, the
program takes a look at how the Academy develops leaders by tracing the academic,
military, physical and moral/ethical development of cadets past and present. The show
includes interviews with distinguished USMA alumni such as H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Pete Dawkins,
Frank Borman, Dave Palmer, Ed Ruggero and Carol Barkalow.

Public Affairs Office produced historical perspective
of the Bicentennial filmed by Daniel Productions and
narrated by Walter Cronkite.
Modern Marvels This hour-long feature on USMA, produced
by the History Channel, was aired in September, 2001.
Driftwood Productions/Oregon PBS produced a
120-minute documentary on the Bicentennial, which
was broadcast Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at 9pm ET.

FIGARO - The France-American Edition The July 12, 2002 edition featured the joint bicentennial celebration of the United States Military Academy at West Point and St. Cyr French Military Academy. Cadets representing both academies marched in the traditional 14th of July parade on the Champs-Elysees.

86th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race Official Program The May 26, 2002 edition of the program featured a two page spread celebrating West Point. The opening of the race included the Cadet Color Guard and Cadet Josephine Holmon singing the National Anthem.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History will celebrate USMA's Bicentennial with an exhibit "West Point in the Making of America: 1802-1918." It will be on display from October 19, 2002 through January 4, 2004. The museum is open daily from 10am to 5:30pm; admission is free. The National Museum of American History is located at 14th Street & Constitution Avenue, NW, Washington DC. The exhibit highlights the role of USMA graduates in the US Army's major functions of 19th - and early 20th- century America: building the nation's infrastructure of roads, bridges, canals, and railroads; exploring its territories from the Mississippi to the Pacific; and fighting its wars.

West Point Scenes Remembered CD
This CD provides you the opportunity to see West Point as you have never seen it before during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The images and text are taken directly from the prints and accounts published during the period, thereby putting the veiwer, into the proper time perspective. Turner Classic Movies-
In honor of the Bicentennial of the U.S. Military Academy, Turner Classic Movies broadcasted a series of West Point films on Monday nights throughout the month of May.
"We Were Soldiers" 50 members of the Cadet Glee Club performed the vocals for
an original piece that will appear in this feature film March 1.
It will be heard during the closing credits of the movie of the
same name that stars Mel Gibson and was directed by
"Braveheart" veteran Randall Wallace.
Wallace, who penned the lyrics to writer Nick Glennie-Smith's
piece were both on hand at West Point for the taping January 9, 2002.

ABC to produce West Point anniversary specials-
ABC Television Network has signed a $25 million multimedia
package with a group of alumni from the U.S. Military Academy at
West Point, to promote the academy's 200th anniversary, through
television specials and commercials.
Bicentennial Poster
Bicentennial Public Service Announcement- The Public Affairs Office is producing a
public service announcement to air on both national and local television on
the Bicentennial in October.
Visitor Center Upgrade- An interactive vision for the Visitor Center
exterior renovation to begin late October 2001.
Bicentennial Display- Archival photographs will be exhibited on a display
in the Visitor Center in August 2001.
I Love New York- Commercial filmed at West Point.
Stewart Airport Exhibit- Newburgh, New York, in early 2002.
Media Kit- Includes footage, Bicentennial film, Bicentennial poster and
fact sheets available in October 2001.
West Point Proclamation Day- Held in Albany, New York, this is the state
legislature's salute to the Bicentennial in April 2002.
