Ethics of War and Peace 2017

United States Military Academy, New York

October 26-28, 2017

The 4th annual Conference on the Ethics of War and Peace will take place at West Point on October 26th to 28th. This year we will mark the 40th anniversary of the publication of Michael Walzer's classic, Just and Unjust Wars, by revisiting its legacy with its author and some of his leading critics. As the traditional just war theory advocated by Walzer is increasingly under attack by revisionist theorists, religious ethicists, and those who question its relevance in an age of unconventional warfare, we will gather to engage with these criticisms, consider new readings of Walzer's work, and to move the discussion in new directions. Please join Michael Walzer along with Lisa Cahill, James Dubik, Judith Lichtenberg, Vincent Lloyd, David Luban, Margaret Moore, Henry Shue, Jeremy Waldron, Jennifer Welsh, and numerous undergraduate presenters for what will certainly be a fruitful discussion.

The Conference on the Ethics of War and Peace is a project of Villanova University and the United States Military Academy. The conference brings together undergraduate students, cadets, officers, scholars, and interested civilians to discuss urgent ethical issues pertaining to the use of military force. The conference aims to create a constructive and open discussion of matters of great public interest that bridges the boundaries between civilians, officers, academics, and practitioners.

All submissions and inquiries should be directed to Dr. Graham Parsons at graham.parsons@usma.edu or (845) 938-0225.
