Mission

Department Mission

The Department of English and Philosophy contributes to the mission of the Military Academy by accomplishing four objectives:

  • teaching cadets to organize their ideas effectively and to express them clearly,
  • providing cadets rewarding ways of reading literature and nurturing their imaginations,
  • making cadets sensitive to the value of leading an examined life by developing in them an understanding of basic philosophic concepts, especially the language, arguments, and methods of moral discourse, and
  • bringing cadets to an appreciation of the diverse cultures that constitute America and the world by studying texts that define those cultures. The Department is also responsible for the Cadet Fine Arts Forum, an educational extracurricular activity. (USMA Regulation 10-1)
USMA Mission

The mission of the United States Military Academy is to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army.

Army Mission

The Army’s mission is to fight and win our Nation’s wars by providing prompt, sustained land dominance across the full range of military operations and spectrum of conflict in support of combatant commanders. We do this by:

  • Executing Title 10 and Title 32 United States Code directives, to include organizing, equipping, and training forces for the conduct of prompt and sustained combat operations on land.
  • Accomplishing missions assigned by the President, Secretary of Defense and combatant commanders, and Transforming for the future.
