DMI has three types of positions available for instructors; Direct Fill, Advanced Civil Schooling (ACS) and NCO positions. Most of our officer and NCO positions are Direct Fill, which do not require an advanced degree. The  person selected for a Direct Fill position would typically come directly from their previous assignment and serve a three-year tour in DMI. Current and projected openings for Direct Fill positions are listed on here when there is a vacancy. ACS positions, are mainly as Assistant Professors in the Military Arts & Science Major and a few Core Course instructor positions and specialty slots.

Nearly every officer and NCO assigned to DMI teaches a Military Science Core Course (MS101 through MS403). Some instructors primarily teach these core courses, while others teach fewer sections and serve in various primary positions such as Branch Representatives, Cadet Summer Training OIC, etc. Many positions are branch immaterial (01A), while others are Combat Arms Immaterial (02A) or Branch specific (some of the branch representative positions).
